A very interesting piece of architecture and history - the drive along the historic highway 30 is beautiful so go slow and savour each curve and vista point. Be sure to understand the history of Vista House before visiting and note the incredible details of the structure including the roof, rails and stairways. Building such a structure there in 1930 would have taken much planning and engineering. In particular note the gentle curve of the guardrails - the builders were very pleased with those. The interior has limited opening hours so check the website.

Well, the title says all. Better do my job here than in a portable john found in most rest places and state parks. However, refrained from ordering an expresso in the same basement.

I visited this place on my way back to Portland, as the final stop of my trip to River Gorge. Unlike my expectation, the weather was foggy when I got here. However, the glimpse of overlook was fantastic. Ample parking spaces.

Beautiful structure and views! I wish we had come a little earlier in the day; it was right at 5 p.m. so they were closing the building. I would have enjoyed getting a coffee and exploring more.

An amazing looking building with great views of the Columbia River. It is a little off the beaten path and the building itself is only open on weekends. But you are able to walk around it and enjoy the views at any time.

This was a surprisingly favorite stop on our trip through the Columbia River Gorge. The views are breathtaking. The building is beautiful. There’s a nice gift shop, restrooms, and even a coffee shop in the basement. There is a single person elevator to use if you need it, but you have to ask for assistance from the staff.

First time here. WOW! What a view of the valley and river. Lots of parking, and the staff here is very friendly and helpful. They do have snacks, and drinks on the lower level.

This is one of the first stops on the western end of the Columbia River Gorge. It was built as such slightly over 100 years ago as a rest area. The view is amazing--but so is the building. It's Art Deco and really cool. There's an small coffee shop and small gift shop along with a small museum. There is a bit of climbing stairs required to see everything

Firstly, perhaps (hopefully) in response to the previous reviewer's experience, there were a number of notices in the car park when we visited, warning visitors not to leave valuables in their cars as there was a risk that they may be stolen.
Unfortunately, we clearly didn't do our research properly, because the 'house' of the Vista House was closed and we learnt from another visitor that, at the moment, it is only open Friday through Monday so, if you want to go inside (and I can't tell you what there is inside, because we didn't get to go in!) you need to pick your day accordingly.
Despite that, it is worth it for the 180 views of the river and gorge. You can see for miles, even on an overcast and rather hazy day. Parking is limited though.
You really shouldn't do this drive without stopping here.

Would the route between Vista House and Corbett (where trolley begins and ends) be walkable? Is there room for walkers or would it be treacherous?

Hi David,
It looks amazing. Planing to go over there, is road safe enough to drive to this point. TO travel to this location requires Chains ?

google Oregon Trip Check to see if it shows the condition of the roads. It is better to come from the west to see it as the roads get progressively more windy but even from the west, you have some steep roads. So you are right to be concerned. The west side of Mount Hood has the most ice and snow. You might be able to call the coffee shop and see if the employees had any problem. As for chains, if you come during the winter, the law requires you to carry chains whether you use them or not, unless you have snow tires.

I'm afraid of driving on cliffs and especially with no or little railings. How is the drive there and back.is there another way to get my mom there .

This is not a road to be afraid of. It curves gently as it elevates. Go slowly and enjoy the view.
