Part of the old Columbia River Highway is now just a nice (paved) trail. Easy to traverse. Great overlooks of the river, highway, and railroad below. Part goes through the original tunnel which has interesting lookouts. Birds and wildlife to be seen as well.

We love to drive the Columbia River Highway and cycle on the sections that are only bike trail. The sections from Mosier provide some of the best of both!
Going east, you drive the section that goes up and over the hills toward the Dalles with some great views of the Columbia River and the Rowena Curves on the roadway.
Going west is the best part of the bike trail all the way to Hood River. It takes you through the Twin Tunnels and keeps you away from I-84, giving you a feel for what if was like to travel through this area in the early 1900's.
Going east, you drive the section that goes up and over the hills toward the Dalles with some great views of the Columbia River and the Rowena Curves on the roadway.
Going west is the best part of the bike trail all the way to Hood River. It takes you through the Twin Tunnels and keeps you away from I-84, giving you a feel for what if was like to travel through this area in the early 1900's.

We decided to travel old US 30 from The Dalles to Mosier. The road is very narrow and winding with high drops on the river side with no guard rail in many sections.
It’s best to travel this road in a small car. A lot of really nice views of the Columbia River Gorge and beautiful cliffs and Forrest in the area.
The road starts heading west at The Dalles and ends at Mosier and reconnects to I-84 then picks back up near the horsetail falls, & Multnomah Falls area then goes back into I-84 again
The highlight of the drive was the Rowena Crest Viewpoint. The road getting up there was a little scary for our 45 foot rig “one ton long bed pick up truck & 24 ft trailer” But the view is spectacular. No words to describe it. Breathe taking. Very much worth the narrow winding roads of old Rt 30. There are several other smaller overlooks that pull off the road in smaller gravel areas that are with stopping at also.
Multnomah Falls is always a amazing view! You will definitely want to visit it on the west end of Old Rt 30 along the Columbia River Gorge

Thank you, Trip Advisor! I am not an aggressive hiker and this path was just perfect. It was gentle and pretty much anyone could take this path for a stroll.

I have driven all of the driveable sections of the Historic Columbia River Highway many times but have always wanted to travel this section, which can only be done by foot or bicycle.
We rode our bikes from Hood River to Mosier and back. The first and last portions are along the old highway, which is still drivable, but with very little traffic. The longest stretch, between the west and east parking lots, is traffic free.
It's fun to ride along and imagine what it was like to drive roads like this almost 100 years ago. This section was completed in 1921. There are two tunnels along the way, one with a rock stairway that leads to a viewing platform of the river down below. Back then, you could stop your car and walk down the stairs to take in the view. Imagine doing that today! The stairs is closed, but you can still take in the view from the top.
There are many beautiful views, with a couple of dedicated viewpoints, to view the river and gorge. It's interesting to look down at I-84 and realize how roads and travel have changed since this highway was built.
If you don't have a bike and want to walk to the twin tunnels, it is much shorter to reach them from the east parking lot, above Mosier. It's just over a mile each way. If you have the time and don't mind a longer walk, coming from the west parking lot above Hood River, takes you through more forested areas with more shade on a hot day.

The paved path to the Twin Tunnels from the east, is a gentle uphill slope, with views all along. The information we had said it was 2 miles each way. But in actuality, the twin tunnels are closer to ONE mile each way, 2 miles round trip. We went beyond, thinking there were more tunnels, and came to a nice view point at about 1.5 miles or so. There, we encountered a runner from the west who informed us that there were no more tunnels farther west.
The signboard at the “Historic Columbia River Highway State Park Senator Mark A. Hatfield East Trailhead” (I am not making that up!) does not provide the actual mileage. It implies that the tunnels are about 1.5 miles away. Back home, I found an Oregon State Parks web site which said 1.5 miles (3 miles round trip). Unfortunately, I didn’t have my GPS with me, but here is what you need to know:
it took an older couple JUST 18 MINUTES to walk uphill to the tunnels, while stopping to admire the view and take pictures along the way.
On our way back, we saw a pair of bald eagles perched high in a burnt snag - quite majestic.
The route is fenced for your safety. From the tunnels, you can see the old cliff-side walkway, but a sturdy gate keeps people out.
If you bicycle this route, have a bell or be prepared to use voice alerts to pedestrians; this is a popular walking and running route.

This is a great place to bike. There are no cars allowed and you get scenic views like this one over the gorge.

Oregon had a huge fire Sept 2017, and the Highway was closed due to it. We were really sad about it. Don't know when the highway will open again. Don't plan a trip for this until you contact someone in Hood to see when it will open.

Part of a 13 day roadtrip around the PNW, the Columbia River Gorge via the Historic Highway was a definite highlight. Since this is such a well-traveled and easily accessible area, I was honestly expecting to be disappointed. I was not. We left our Portland hotel around 9 and started with the Vista House. A lovely place and good to get your bearings. All of the volunteers here were friendly and helpful. I was traveling with my mom and aunt who don't get around like they used to and the volunteers were able to tell us which points of interest were easily accessible. Luckily, most of the attractions/sites were easy visible from the car or point near the parking lots so they could enjoy the scenery without a hike or incline.
Next up was Latourell Falls which you can see from the road, but if you're up for it, a hike down to the pool/bridge is well worth it. I've only ever seen rock formations like those around the falls in Iceland and Northern Ireland. Beautiful, bright green moss as well.
Bridal Veil was next and from my experience, was the most strenuous hike. You could not see these falls without doing the hike down some relatively steep switchbacks. It's not long, but it's steep. Nice falls though.
Multonmah Falls is probably the most well-known and iconic of the falls along the highway and has a more built up visitor's area. The falls are easily accessible from the parking lot. There's a snack bar and also a decent restaurant in the lodge. This was a very crowded place on the Friday before Labor Day. The traffic congestion could have been helped with more direction from rangers or employees. It was a confusing process. Nice mid-way stop for lunch.
Horsetail Falls is easily seen from the road and is very pretty.
All-in-all, the falls were all worthwhile. Each was different and unique.
From there, we turned south to visit the historic Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood and then back to Portland for a busy, but well-spent day.

The twin tunnels is an easy hike from the east side. The path is paved and although getting to the tunnels from the parking lot is uphill, you have several opportunities to stop along the way and look at the views and take pictures. It was about a mile to the tunnels. I was most surprised at the wind. It was in the 90's when we did our walk so the breeze felt good. We did not walk the entire length of the paved path but did go well past the tunnels, then turned around and walked back. Parking cost $5.00. We were there around 9 am and the path was not busy at all. We saw a few bikers but there were no other hikers at that time. The views and the great hike make this a must see and do!
