I don’t know how this place only has 68 reviews. If you like history it’s an amazing place that goes all the way back to 1908. The pictures do a good job of summarizing the displays. The tree from Chickamagwa, TN with all the bullets and shrapnel from the civil war are amazing. We spent about 2 hours and probably needed 2.5 hrs. Obviously lots of reading. At the end there’s a digital tool to input your last name to see if any Allegheny County veterans are in your family tree. Museum covers the War of 1812, Spanish American War, civil war, WWI - Afghanistan. And the 3rd floor is where they filmed the Silence of the Lambs scene with Hannibal Lecture in a big cage in the middle of a grand hall.

Great venue!!

Visited on Memorial Day when they had lots of stuff happening, including live music from the Civil War era. Cool experience and an extensive collection of items and memorabilia from/reflecting different U.S. wars. Much bigger than it seems from the outside. Unfortunately the balcony was closed. Definitely a museum I'd recommend for anyone interested in war history or patriotic themes.

The military exhibits here start with the Revolution & progress through time to the present day. They are informative, easy to see & easy to read. The Civil War exhibits are many & provide many facts & items you won't see anywhere else. There is a parking garage under the building that has various rates based on what day you visit. I parked on the street just a few yards from the entrance using pay parking that cost me $4 for 1 1/2 hours which worked out to be a perfect amount of time for us. I was even able to pay for parking with my credit card. I highly recommend a visit here for any military history buff.

My husband and I visited here on a Saturday while our granddaughter was having her Pitt Connect session at the university. The outside of the building is so imposing and beautiful, we had to see the inside. Our tour started in the auditorium, which was gorgeous, the details on the ceiling alone are amazing. The gentleman who started our tour explained that the exhibits go around the perimeter of the building starting with the Civil War, then onto the wars that followed, ending with a small (currently) exhibit from Desert Storm, and we were free to browse at our leisure. We were looking at the very first exhibit case when Gene, a volunteer approached us. He is a 96-year old WWII vet and he proceeded to give us a ton of information on that very first exhibit. He took us around the entire museum, sharing his vast knowledge, especially of the Civil War. We learned so much that we never would have gotten from looking at the exhibits alone. We really learned what life was like for those soldiers. He explained how the different ammunition worked, the evolution of firearms, just so much! He knew dates of battles and events off the top of his head, it was very impressive. He talked with us for 3 hours and we felt honored to have him do that for us. He even let me hold a Colt revolver from the 1800’s (the cylinder was a replica so it wasn’t part of the exhibit). I would recommend this museum to anyone with an interest in history.

The Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum functions as both a memorial to veterans of prior wars and as a museum.

The displays in the museum contain artifacts and exhibits covering the period of military history from before the Civil War to the modern era. I thought the parts dedicated to the Civil War era were the most interesting, not least because the building was originally built as a memorial for Civil War veterans.

The admission charge of $15 for adults was a little expensive for a museum that takes about 45 minutes to explore, unless you are really, really interested in the subject matter or have a personal connection. Also, the gift shop appeared closed when I visited.

I didn't see any docents or guides. It would have been nice if there was an architecture tour as the building itself is noteworthy for architecture enthusiasts.

This a free building for the public to access in downtown. Although not on any list of top things to see if you are interested in history I think it should be. This building dose have air conditioning so is a nice stop when walking downtown.

The building was dedicated in 1910 as a memorial to Civil War veterans and a meeting hall for the Grand Army of the Republic events. 25-30% of the displays relate to the Civil War, but others wars through Desert Storm are also commemorated. (Nothing specific to Afghanistan — yet, I hope.) History buffs will find it interesting and will easily spend a couple of hours to go through all the displays.

Excellent collection of the different uniforms used by US soldiers. Also, it is interesting to see the development of the guns used during the different wars and the participation of women.
