Very nice and clean with cute restaurants and small business shopping. All the employees were so friendly. And the park with swings for relaxing watching people, birds boats on the water was a treat.

This is a beautiful historic spot. Be sure to walk along the street to the west to see the beautiful homes. There are several shops and restaurants. Many restaurants are not open on Sunday and/or Monday.

Beaufort was founded in 1711 and Bay Street is the jewel of the historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bay Street is lined with beautiful homes of Federal, Antebellum, Greek Revival, Neo Classical and other styles overlooking the park and the Beaufort River. There are walking and carriage tours available as well as blocks of boutiques, antique shops, historic lodging and stores/restaurants of all kinds. Bay Street is very walkable as well as the entire historic district. Beaufort is a South Carlina gem.

We visited the weekend into the week if July 4 holiday. Lots of shops and restaurants were closed, but still nice to walk around town. The people are very friendly! We’ll be back.

Bay Street is the main street that runs parallel to the Beaufort River in Beaufort, SC. If you are going south toward Port Royal on Ribaut Street, then you would make a left turn. At first, you will see older historic homes on the left side and newer homes on the waterfront on the right. After you go about a block, the view opens up and you can see the Beaufort River on your right and antebellum homes on your left. Eventually you will come to about two blocks of restaurants and shops on both sides. The businesses on the right side have the harbor park in their backyard.
The street is lovely and quiet, but can be busy during peak "tourist" times. It's best to park along the street on the river side and walk or park in the marina parking lot. The street on the river side is free to park, but there is a limit to how long you can park there (no overnight). The marina parking lot costs a dollar an hour to park. You have to pay at a machine and put the ticket on your dashboard. I think you can also use some sort of app to pay. The closest public bathroom is at the marina parking lot. The river side is parallel parking only, but the marina is pull in parking. We've parked in both areas with never an issue.
If you want to have a quiet "reflective" spot to enjoy, then park on the river side before you get to the shopping area. The Beaufort Land Trust has done an excellent job of keeping the area clean and well-manicured. There are plenty of places to walk or sit and enjoy the boats on the river and in the harbor.
There is a sidewalk for safe walking on the left side where the homes are but no sidewalk on the river side until you get to the marina parking lot.
We visit Beaufort often and our tradition is to go get takeout on our first night there and go park on the river side and eat our inaugaral (sp?) dinner in our beach chairs. We take a blanket and a cooler. It's very quiet and there are plenty of shaded areas for you to sit.

If you are searching for a place that perfectly fits the definition of "quaint", Bay Street in Beaufort, SC is the place. Stand in any place on Bay Street and you are inside of a story book titled"Quaint". It is busy enough to be interesting and tranquil enough to be cozy.
The only bad thing about Bay Street is eventually having to depart unless you live there.

You can see a way of life, from Civil War mansions to modern offerings by walking a mile along Bay Street. An easy stroll with a great view of the water on one side and something to entice anyone on the other. Stop by the local shops and take in the local art and crafts, well worth the time

This experience is breath taking! Walk or drive this and it is so wonderful! Beautiful giant old historic homes line the Bay Street as well as waterfront area. Some are Bed and breakfasts where you can stay.

Quaint street with shopping and restaurants. Eventually opens up so that the marina and water are on one side. Pretty wide sidewalks and while there was a fair amount of traffic, motorists go fairly slow and seemed cautious and aware of pedestrians.
Worth a walk for couples and kids.

Best place to park? Best place to start walking Bay Street?
Rédigé le 10 septembre 2018
There is parking by the water and some on the side streets. As for walking, anywhere is fine because you can go down one side and then back up the other. It’s not too long. Have fun!
