During a Gullah Tour, we stopped by this museum. We had the privilege of visiting Mr Simmons workshop and the inside of his home. Such an humble man with an amazing talent. It’s not a whole lot to see as the home is small. The iron works on display are beautiful.

I went there with my girlfriend while I was visiting and Charleston. She had the privilege of knowing Philip Simmons and so we had to go see his Museum. Mr. Simmons is famous for his wrought iron fences that are all over Charleston. There is a tour that you can take for the Charleston language Gullah which I would also highly recommend definitely a must do when you're in Charleston

This home is hidden - it sits behind the front house (which will soon be renovated) and has parking in the "between space" for 3 vehicles maximum. It was pouring down raining; so we arrived about 30 mins after the published live demonstration time of 2pm. No worries! South Carolina hospitality was in full effect; as we were greeted at the door by Ms. Colter, the Curator/museum guide. Ms. Colter is knowledgeable and passionate about sharing Philip Simmons' story - amazing contributions to the state of South Carolina. Carlton Simmons is continuing the legacy; and it was a treat to see him in action. Take your mosquito repellent - but don't miss this spot!

My friend and I had a special tour which brought us to the former home of Philip Simmons. Mr. Simmons, an African American, was an artist who created hundreds of hand wrought iron fences and gates. His workshop is in the garage and I got to see his modest home and learn about his productive life. In his bedroom is a crown given to him by the children on his street because he was seen as the "king of the neighborhood".
Also there are lovely and not very expensive items in the gift shop. Rossi, the curator, is informative and kind.

We walked for about a mile, and were getting nervous about the undesirable looking neighborhood we had to go through to get to the museum. Almost didn't see it, as it was tucked away behind a dilapidated, paint peeling building. But once inside, our little lady tour guide, (can't remember her name,) gave us an interesting and enjoyable explanation about Mr.Simmons and his work, and his life, and how it's still being carried on. We all enjoyed this museum.

Our visit was wonderful. The address is correct you have to walk around the house in the front to get to Phillip Simmons house and his workshop. I almost left when I saw the do not enter signs on the house in front. Please do go on around to the back and you're in for a treat. The house is great because of the information from Roci. She was able to give us a glimpse into the life of Phillip Simmons. This is definitely worth your time. The length of your visit is dependent on how curious you are. The more questions you have the longer you'll stay. it is not a lengthy tour since it's a small house. There's no admission fee. Donations are accepted.

One of the great artist of America. I was lucky enough to meet this great man decades ago and still marvel at the beauty of the work he did. He is surely one of the jewels in the crown of this great American city. His stamp cast everywhere you look.

Took the Gullah tour with Mr Brown and he took us here. We were shown many of the wrought iron works done by Mr Simmons. We went to his small house. He was a simple man not requiring much although he had the means . The workshop appeared to be a garage without fancy embellishments. The house itself contained small rooms and his own room was about 10 x 10 in size. Knew nothing about him when entering and became an expert on him after the Gullah tour.

The tour of the Philip Simmons Home was informative and inspiring. Although I didn't know the name Philip Simmons prior to visiting Charleston, I came away with a deep appreciation of the works of a man whose talent and persistence in the face of challenges made such a positive impact.

This is the home and workshop of a man who produced some great ironwork, especially gates for homes and gardens. The house has a small gift shop and has materials relating to the life of Philip Simmons. The workshop in the back still has examples of tools and materials that were used by Mr. Simmons. A donation may be made if you desire. This may appear to be a very small piece of history, but it is very interesting and worthwhile.
