Beautiful drive with lots of spots to stop for pictures. Saw a couple of the falls along with a mountain goat and her baby just off the side of the road. Don't miss this!

Water that rushes, tumbles, and quietly pools is the centerpiece of this unique scenic drive through a gloriously carved wonderland.
Many turnoffs can be found. Fishing spots are available. Wildlife, such as mountain goats, frequently makes appearances.
Looking for a beautiful driving diversion, head to Spearfish Canyon.

Gorgeous drive! There’s not much in the way of facilities, and no potable water on any of the trails so that needs to be considered when planning a trip. Also cell reception is wonky. Photos don’t do the area justice. Simply beautiful!

Beautiful drive through the canyon. The bridal veil fall was amazing. The temperature was comfortable to be out and enjoy the surroundings.

Really pretty drive, nice to get into the mountains a little for a break from the heat. Bridal Veil Falls is pretty and can be seen from the street. Worth the drive.

Beautiful drive. There are a handful of stops along the way that you can take little walks or hikes to see waterfalls. Well worth the drive!

The drive was beautiful, and we stopped for a short walk to Spearfish Falls. The walk is easy and worth taking. I would spend more time here on a future visit.

This drive is always on our road trips in the area. The views are amazing, the waterfalls and creek are beautiful and there are plenty of stops and pull outs to enjoy nature.

A very nice road to kill some time on the way from Devils Tower to Rapid City. We found the three major waterfalls, two were well hidden, do your research before you go.
The road is at the bottom of the canyon, no cliffs to run off while looking at the scenery.
As a side note, follow the road to Lead SD and visit the open pit mine, its free. 41 million ounces of gold came up from that hole and its shafts.

WE are going with a 23' travel trailer to Devil's Tower/Black Hills, is a travel trailer a problem on the Spearfish Canyon Byway - are there places to park it if we want to go hike at one of the falls?
Rédigé le 24 octobre 2019
Yes there is parking. By the way, you won't be able to drive Needles Hwy towing an RV: too narrow, winding and tunnels VERY narrow. A note: We didn't think Spearfish Canyon was as impressive in its geology as Iron Mtn Rd or Needles Hwy.

Would I be about able to touch the water at the falls or is it prohibited?
Rédigé le 28 juin 2019
We walked down a path to the stream below the falls. It is very shallow, so we walked across the rocks to a slightly inclined path up to the base of the falls! We stood at the base and it was awesome! We are 60 and had no problem making the little hike! Recommend doing so!

We are staying in Rapid City and want a full day trip to Devils Tower. Looking for some help/advice of how to get the most out of this drive. Thinking of going hwy 90 to DT first and get that over with early. Then head back 90 to hwy 14 and catch Spearfish Canyon Byway. Come out at Deadwood and stop for a bit. Then take 385 to 16 back to Rapid City. We are not hikers, but would love areas to pull off and take a site in or a short drive off the path. Not looking for speed, just want to catch the route with the best sites. Any idea how long this might take? Really appreciate the help.

We tried almost the exact same trip, though we started at the western edge of Badlands NP and headed straight to Devils Tower, then back through Spearfish Canyon. Depending on when you start and how fast you drive, it is a LOT to pack into one day. We ended up skipping Deadwood (which I'm not really sorry about). We did DT in the morning, and our schedule was a little rushed - I wish we had a couple more hours to spend there, as we really enjoyed it but didn't have enough time for a long hike.
We did Spearfish Canyon drive on the way back, drove to Lead (near Deadwood), had lunch in the car, and continued on to 385 South (not really scenic) then on to Needles Highway (stunning!) and Iron Road (incredible!). If I had to do it over again, I'd start earlier in the morning, spend more time at Devils Tower, and spend more time on Spearfish Canyon. I'd save Needles Highway and Iron Road for a dedicated day, finishing at Mt. Rushmore for the evening flag lowering ceremony.

We are staying in Keystone right now for 2 more days and are debating whether to drive up to Spearfish Canyon with our 2 teenaged boys for the day or go to Sylvan Lake in Custer. We stayed in Custer for a few days already but didn't see Sylvan Lake. Heard great things about Spearfish though. Any thoughts?

I bet your boys would LOVE Devil's Bathtub in Spearfish! In addition to the gorgeous drive and falls you can see from the road, you can take an easy hike up the creek, criss-crossing the creek, and discover some beautiful wading pools, all culminating in the Bathtub which is a natural rock waterslide ending in a deep cold water plunge! My boys and nephews ages 5-18 loved it last month. It was our favorite adventure in the Hills! I love Sylvan Lake too, but I'd go for the hike off the beaten path and the plunge! Bring swimsuits, and water shoes come in handy too for crossing the creek with ease.

How much time should you plan to enjoy the byway ?
Rédigé le 17 juin 2017
Several hours depending on number of stops. Great restaurant across from the Spearfish Lodge and also the location of best falls which take about 30 minutes roundtrip to hike down and back up. Two other falls in Canyon worth seeing, too. If you want to visit Deadwood head on through the Canyon for another hour.

It took us several hours as we stopped several times to enjoy the scenery, wander around, take pictures. You could do it in 2 hours or up to 4.
Rédigé le 23 juin 2017
This may be a silly question - but do you have to start in Spearfish to drive the byway? We will becoming from Deadwood so wondered if we could start at the end and work our way towards Spearfish?
Rédigé le 18 août 2016
We took 85 and went up 14a to Spearfish. At the junction is an awesome restaurant. It has the best Indian tacos and excellent breakfast. You can walk at the first falls.

Just realized our arrival date of8/14 is end of Sturgis Rally will that spill over to Spearfish.
Rédigé le 8 août 2016
As you can tell from (most) of the other respondents, the answer is yes. The Black Hills are excellent for motorcycle touring and day tripping (as well as car tripping). Do not let the thought of the rally stop you from doing your thing! Definitely, pack a cooler with plenty of water, juice boxes, snacks, and goodies. The Mount Rushmore and Crazyhorse sites will be crowded (but that would be the case anyway in the summer), so start your days' activities early on the days you plan on going to Rushmore or Crazyhorse Monuments. Deadwood is going to be crowded (it is supposed to be crowded). If you are staying in Spearfish, (I stayed at Bell's motorlodge and had a pleasant stay) and you want a day away from the bulk of the blackhill's tourists, consider showing the kids "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" one evening, then heading over to Devil's Tower the next day (its relatively easy to get to from Spearfish)

Yes. From what we were told Deadwood is packed. Riders like to take the road by the falls.

Do you have a preferred direction to take this route?
Rédigé le 19 mai 2016
Prefer to start at Spearfish in mid-morning with eastern sunlight on canyon walls. Usually cool enough to have window or top or roof window down part of trip. Traffic is usually light. Then arriving at Savoy before noon, a lunch stop at the Latchstring (also called Lodge restaurant) on their deck facing the sun drenched cliff is quite nice. Restaurant has varied menu. After (or before) walks to canyon floor and close waterfall and plant viewing is fabulous. And/or board walks around Roughlock Falls just two miles north is outstanding viewing. With the drive time, lunch and walks, visitors can have at least four hours of enjoyable excursion.
