The exhibits in this museum of three connected buildings change every four months, so we are ever encouraged to return. Current glass show of works owned by a consummate collector offers so much to learn about glass through this extensive display. Take an easy stroll through one museum to the others to find varied exhibits of historic and current works, with helpful museum staff who guide and explain with pride.

It's not *quite* a major city art museum, but the selections are well curated and any number would hold their own in larger galleries on the quality of the work vs name of the artist. Building itself is by a Ghery student and it certainly shows. Agree wonderful views and you can shoot the building from a the pedestrian bridge across the river as well. Slight disappointment in the hstoric house - it's really just been carved into galleries, and while the staircase/entrance remains, you don't get that much of a sense of this building as it once was. Still, appreciation for having preserved it. I was actually in Chatanooga for something else but adjusted my day to spend more time at the Hunter.

It is worth visiting this museum just for the architecture and exterior spaces and terraces and views. I would pay the price of admission just to go out on the terrace and look at the beautiful views. Also, the interior is so lovely. There’s a modern interior and then the older space, and this layout allows rooms that feel smaller and more private while also having rooms that are more expansive that suit larger pieces. The staff is friendly; the gift shop is small but worthwhile.
The only thing that would make this museum better is if they had a little café. It would be wonderful to have a cup of coffee or a glass of champagne, but I completely understand what a production is to add a café. I just always enjoy spending the morning at any museum, and then pausing for lunch, and then spending the afternoon. This museum is also not so large that it cannot be taken in in either the morning or the afternoon, but the idea of being able to take a little cup of coffee out on the terrace would be enchanting.
I enjoyed their permanent collection, but their visiting exhibits are also delightful. This time, one of the visiting exhibits included a digital media aspect. It was really quite impressive with some larger pieces, and it was thoughtfully curated. The emoji interpretation on the classic The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch
painting was brilliant!
Friendly staff adds to enjoyment. 5 stars!

Extremely well curated - felt as if I was in an art history class thanks to the wonderful descriptions. The section on the history of the museum itself is very informative. Great views of the river from the many balconies.

This could have been an excellent museum.
However, there were a few shock and awe moments, I really did not feel were necessary.
In my opinion, It almost felt like someone was purposely trying to be divisive.
As I walked up to the museum I was greeted by a beautiful statue of a "Human" unfortunately it was butt naked. As a mom and a woman, I felt so embarrassed by this statue being right outdoors in plain view for everyone to see , especially CHILDREN ! This art should be "INSIDE" a museum, not out front. The rest of it was the normal art, from modern (that I personally think is not really art) to beautiful paintings and blown glass. It does have a good mixture of varying art types depending upon your taste. Another shocking moment was when we were in the old part of the original museum looking at the more historical paintings. They were drab and mute colored paintings of founding fathers and other people of that time period. In the middle of the wall was a brightly colored painting almost triple the size of the rest. I had no problem with this painting until I saw were the "Humans" hands where. Both hands looked as if they were tucked into the lower article of clothing while resting upon the "Humans" genitalia.
This was very offensive and downright distasteful !!!!!
I took a picture, but out of good conscience, I decided not to post it.
I really hope they rethink some of their controversial decisions.
Due to the nature of todays society, I have chosen to use the word "Human" in place of identifying any gender and or ethnicity .
It may have proven to be too controversial for my original post.
On another note
It truly saddened me not to see any noticeable Christmas decorations at this museum. I love coming to the mountains in December, to experience the southern charm and warmth of the Christmas seasons lights and decoration. Personally, I think "not" participating in this annual event was a missed opportunity for drawing crowds. Maybe someone could donate some Christmas and or Holiday art.
" Hopefully "it would be welcomed.

Living in Chattanooga, Keith and I often enjoy a visit to the Hunter. This Sunday provided an opportunity to view the Spectrum art auction selections. It was a highlight of our downtown Sunday Funday.

I have been an enthusiastic supporter of the Hunter Museum for the past 38 years! EVERY time I go to the Hunter I see something fascinating and new. This is an amazing asset for our city. The permanent collection is amazing and the temporary exhibits are beautifully curated. Count me a huge fan!

Do you need appointment to get a piece appraised if not is the line long waits
Rédigé le 22 février 2019
Not sure about appraisals. I was there only to view art in museum. There were no lines at anytimes I have visited. You could call to have your questions answered.

Is the art on display interesting for kids ages 7-15?
Rédigé le 21 février 2018
I would say, kids over 10 may find it more interesting. There are art activities , but would say they are for kids over 10. If your 7 year old is especially interested in creating art, then it may be OK.

What hotels are within walking distant of Hunter Museum?
Rédigé le 18 juillet 2015
We stayed at Read House which is on Broad & MLK and walked. There are many hotels closer to the museum but it's a small city so walking isn't a problem. There is also an free electric trolley that runs every 5 minutes on Broad.
