We went to the Powdermill Hill trading post for a Sunday afternoon adventure. It was actually closed so check and see if it’s open on Sunday before you go because that changes sometimes. The owner was there and let us look around inside anyway. My husband found some things he needed for some art he is working on and I bought a turquoise ring. It is very accessible to Highway 64. The owner, Todd, is interesting and kind. Lots of great treasures here! Great place to visit just to see what is there or for something specific!

There are special places of history and regional cultural interest in the United States and this place is one. Inside there is wonderful chaos chocked full an amazing special collection of antiques and Americana rarely seen in one location.

Get off US 64 and go visit this place you will be glad you did! You’ll find both Todd the owner and Tricia his assistant cordial, friendly and informative. Actually this special place is on “Old US 64” just a few miles from the 64 by-pass so get off the by-pass and go see this place.

Once there, even if you don’t go inside, and, I encourage you to; there is enough outside the buildings to keep you fascinated for hours. Such as the old cars, machines, signs and even the far, far from the north, two Rhode Island Red chickens usually roaming the grounds.

Once inside – everyplace, I mean everyplace, you look there will be an item to attract your attention. It’s an incredible collection, whether you’re in the market or just a looker there is something there for you. Such as the beautifully stuffed and rare cinnamon colored black bear; he even has a dagger in his mouth! Or, a bright red “Valiant” bicycle, reported to be the last one made at the Murray Bike factory, when it closed in Tennessee. Or, old glass pop bottles and glass marbles, or bottles of Peach, Muscadine or Blackberry Ciders. There’s even a working 1967 Italian made 106cc motorcycle available for sale. Trish told me they have a collection of over seven hundred lunchboxes! There’s a whole room dedicated to their quilt collections. For fun look for the collector “Mr. Frank” hat box near the bear – there’s one there if someone hasn’t snapped it up.

Also available is the regionally popular “Grandpa Yoder’s” homemade jams. (Todd told me as a young boy he went hunting in the Tennessee hills with Grandpa Yoder.)
Hidden behind the building, a branch of Choate Creek runs clear cold water in a rustic setting. Todd said he recently measured the water at a crisp sixty-two degrees Fahrenheit.

Powermill Hill Trading Post is located a few miles east of Lawrenceburg in a Tennessee “hollow” on “Old US 64”. The area is known as “powermill” because there once was a confederate gunpowder factory there. Set your GPS to 2024 Powermill Hill Rd., Lawrenceburg, TN 38446, or ask the locals, they’ll tell you exactly how to get there.
