As we have previously only been in the area in the winter months we were only able to view the house from the outside. Being a bit earlier this year, we finally got to go inside - and what a treat it was.

The house belonged to the Sharp family who were from Dundee and had made a fortune from the jute trade. Apparently the master of the family was also a keen golfer who decided that he wanted a house a bit nearer to St Andrews, so he had the house built for convenience. He also decided that the house should be built in a style best placed to display his collections of artwork, tapestries, pottery etc., and what a fabulous job the architect made.

Although the house is properly described as a mansion, it isn’t like those huge country piles we often see at NT sites. This one is much smaller and, in my opinion, feels like a home. It is the sort of place you would love to have stayed at - if only for a day or two. Clearly there are some marvellous artistic pieces to admire, but I mainly enjoyed simply looking at the furnishings and taking in the ambience of each individual room.

Without doubt this is one of the nicest NT properties we have ever visited.

The best that NTS has to offer. Fully open, with very knowledgeable volunteers keen to impart lots of detail of this impressive early 20th century mansion.

Every room was relatable in terms of items and furnishings but made special by Natational Trust Staff who who told the somewhat tragic but very interesting story of the the owners and their history

The "collection" of arts and artefacts were fascinating and wide-ranging from the drawing room furniture to the Dutch landscapes and in particular the household items of the kitchen and laundry but perhaps the biggest delight was the strange sound effects produced when talking under the domed ceiling of the Lady's bedroom. Well worth experimenting with, for the weird stereo effects when talking to one another.

We have been NTS members for 3 years now and this was, by far, our favourite visit to any of their properties, due not just for what was on show but the enthusiasm of those in hand to tell the story of Hill of Tarvit Mansion.

Didn't manage a round of golf with the hickory mashies and niblicks but think it would be a grand afternoon out for an idea of what the game used to be like.

A beautiful mansion house with what turns out to be a very interesting history. Visited here today and my husband and we really enjoyed the pre visit information and then being able to explore so many rooms within the house. It was a huge added bonus to have such informative guides spread throughout the house to point out so many interesting things along the way and share their knowledge. The detail that went into designing the interior of this house still blows me away, and the fact that it has been looked after so well by the NTS is just fantastic. Lovely grounds but the house is definitely the main reason to visit. X

I discovered this beautiful house and its gardens by chance when I went to locate Barbarafield Riding School, where I had booked a hack for the next day. As I rely on public transport and the buses to Cupar are only once every two hours on a Sunday, it turned out to be the best possible discovery I have ever made to pass the time waiting for the next bus! I would recommend it to anyone, especially if you are already headed that way - do not miss out! If you are going for a hack, you will pass it on horseback as well, and can imagine yourself as a member of the family simply enjoying your grounds. It's only a 20 minute walk from the riding school (just beware: no pavement at all between the two, unfortunately, and the road can get busy at times!) and would be a short drive, if you are driving.

The £10 for entry to the mansion house itself is well worth it, as there is plenty to see and the guides are all exceptionally welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. They were great at answering and anticipating my questions, including shedding light on old household appliances which I could not identify at all! Their passion for the history of the house and its legacy is clear and wonderful to see - it is very contagious and I learned a lot! This house is particularly special because the vast majority of the furnishings and other contents are authentic and have never left it, which means we can enjoy it almost as fully as if we were invited to visit it in its heyday. You get a real sense of what life must have been like - it is like stepping back in time!

The gardens (free) are gorgeous and always open to wander around and explore. I have now been several times and have enjoyed many of the marked walks. The walk up the hill is particularly worthwhile, as it is not all that long and yet you are rewarded with absolutely stunning views over all the surrounding countryside and villages/towns from the top. There are also helpful information plaques explaining everything you can see in different directions. Across the road from Hill of Tarvit Mansion, there is also Scotstarvit Tower just a short walk away.

It is a shame that the mansion itself is only open at weekends and that there is no longer a cafe, but, all in all, I highly recommend a visit (or several)! There are also other activities you can do there, such as golf and snooker, if you fancy them. The gardens are also a clear hit with dog walkers, as I ended up bumping into a lot of them, including someone I had previously met in Cupar, who ended up giving me a lift back (I got so into exploring all the walks that I actually ended up missing the next bus I could have caught!) I am not sure if anything extra is offered for kids, as I did not go with any and have not seen any there, but that could be something to think about if not - a quiz where they have to listen for/find the answers around the house and gardens and then a little prize at the end (if that is not available, I would recommend making your own if possible, just to give you the best possible chance of enjoying the history of the house as well while keeping the wee ones entertained).

A big thank you to the guides and everyone who makes maintaining such a wonderful piece of architecture, landscaping and history possible, and who keep its spirit and history alive so that we will all hopefully be able to continue enjoying it for generations to come. It is all too common to see once impressive residences and historical treasures ignored, neglected and completely abandoned until they are in such a bad state that they are demolished/otherwise disposed of. I am so glad that this one has been saved and shared with us all!

One of Scotland’s hidden gems, just spent a week here with our two dogs and loved it . Very friendly staff working on the estate offered advise where to walk the dogs, at the time of writing this the house is only open on a Saturday and Sunday. Cupar is only 2 miles away with local shopping and national supermarkets plus dog friendly pubs that allows dogs in we used The Boudingate.

Hi Allan, many thanks for your 5 star review. The team there are so pleased you had a great time at the mansion and estate. We hope to welcome you again to enjoy a holiday with us in the future. This year the mansion is open Saturdays and Sundays only, and we will keep it in review whether we can open more days in the coming years. With best waggy tail wishes,

THE NTS website said the house was open at weekends, but the gardens and toilets were open daily. On arrival, the toilets were not just closed, but marked 'out of order', and a notice on the front door of the house indicated that house and gardens were open at weekends. So we had a wasted journey through misinformation.

Good afternoon, We are sorry that things were not as you were hoping for your visit back in 2021. We were experiencing some difficulties with the waste system at this time, and so until they were repaired, we had to close them which was unfortunate. The gardens were open as normal throughout 2021 and hope that you were able to enjoy them on your visit. We can assure you that they are fully functional and open 7 days a week for this 2022 season. With best wishes,

Decided to visit this historic house mainly because we were told that there is a painting by one of the Brueghels on display. We found it quickly but also found a substantial collection of many significant artworks.
The house has a fascinating history and the many guides bring that to life very well. We very much enjoyed our 1+ hour visit walking around the various rooms and admiring the artworks. The house is being kept lovingly in the state it was left when the Sharp family bequeathed it to the NTS all those years ago and it's brilliant to see historic houses like this are open to the public.
There is also a lovely garden to walk in and a monument on top of a steep hill.
A tearoom is missing but the town of Cupar is only a couple of miles away with plenty of hostelries for every taste.

Tarvit is an amazing place to visit. Whether that be just the gardens, the hickory gold or the historical mansion House. The guides all know they're stuff and were able to answer any questions thrown at them. Overall a great day out

Lovely venue with great views, it was a great space for our wedding and the in-house catering was delicious and they were accommodating to our gluten free guests and dairy free guests too!
We had a lovely lady help us with planning as it is a historic site and it needs extra care so they have lists of people they work with and we thought it was going to be a nightmare to organise because of this but they really made everything quite easy and relatively stress free (for any wedding)! They were very accommodating and friendly on the lead up to the wedding
The rooms were beautiful and well maintained
We had all of the outside space too so we got lots of great photos

This art course was fabulous - Steve Bretel if a gifted artist and teacher and despite the group having a wide range of experience he managed to make the weekend stimulating and challenging for all.
As the mansion house was still closed to visitors we were able to use both the house and gardens for inspiration - a beautiful location for a creative weekend.
Hill of Tarvit Mansion is well worth a visit with a diverse range of events taking place throughout the year. Thoroughly recommend!
