The Longmire area is located between the parks western entrance at Ashford and the Paradise area. Longmire is at the base of the mountain and was a perfect visit for our first morning in the park when the top was covered with fog. We hiked several trails here and got to see the springs that supplied water to the original town. While it may not be the best park of the mountain, it is a different part of the park that can have different weather. We greatly enjoyed our time here.

This natural spring is really not an "attraction." It's a site along a short trail in the Longmire area of Mt Rainier NP. The Longmire village began when natural springs were discovered and advertised as healing "mineral springs." A few stone fountains around the springs are what remains. The springs continue to gurgle, and the history is interesting, but it's just something to see briefly on a hike.

Good stopping place if in the Park. Interesting history of the Springs and the Longmire family who developed a place for people to take the waters at. Cold Water Springs bubbling up from the ground in a number of spots and a nice short 1 mile hike around the springs through a lush forest on what is a mostly gravel path. Lots of parking and other hikes from his spot and even views of Mount Rainier when there is no clouds. Nice gift ship and lodge nearby. This whole Park is a scenic treat with great views around every corner. This specific entry location and road is basically the only place you can enter the Park and visit in May.

Even in November it was very warm, and a wonderful place to visit. There are so many bubbly spots where you can see the power of nature!

These hot mineral springs were essential as a visitor attraction to the business success of the Longmuirs family hotel. You may see some bubbling action, it is an ideal place to stop for a walk along this easy trail lined with impressive trees.

Trail of the Shadow
This trail is a short, mostly flat that surrounds the mineral springs that brought James Longmire and guests first to the area. We did see a small area where the hot springs were bubbling.
The trail has some big trees that are beautiful too.

This is just a footnote in the much larger experience of Mt. Rainier National Park. If you happen to come in the entrance to the park that takes you by Longmire and you have the time and interest then stop here for the short stroll or walk.

This was the site of the hot springs which enabled the Longmire family to attract the visitors to their hotel. Not much to see but it helps to build out the history of the place.

The springs are a part of the Trail of the Shadows, which is across the street from Longmire. There is a large parking lot, from which you may see deer at certain times of day; we did.
The trail itself is an oval. It may be well trafficked, or it may be empty. It was the latter when we went, which was on a Friday afternoon in May.It's about 0.7 miles long and goes by homesteads, hot springs, and forest. There is very little elevation gain and loss along the way.

There is an easy, circular trail around the lake/bog formed by the springs. It passes by the original Longmire springs and lodge where there are historic markers explaining some of the history of the place. The trail is very well marked and very well maintained. It passes through an interesting mix of swamp, dense forest, meadow and creek-side areas. Especially nice in the early morning or late evening when the light is softer and the sounds are muted.

Do people get into the hot springs to soak? Do we need a reservation if so?
