This tour is educational and easy to understand concerning the challenges of farming, growing, selling, cooking, and eating these mushrooms. Learning about the famous Alii mushrooms is fun for all ages, locals and visitors, and experts or not in cooking. A chef from Maui even joined our close-up tour, which is a testament to this mushroom that is famous all over Hawaii! This Alii mushroom is also called King Oyster mushroom on the mainland.

It was surprisingly wonderful and so worth the drive. We will return with friends again. Love the demonstration of slicing, dicing and sautéing, plus samples are divine.

After a warm welcome, we toured the "farm" with a very personable guide. We will definitely be brining visitors to our island here! It exemplifies Aloha.

I live on the Big Island and eat Hamakua Mushrooms often, sourcing them at local supermarkets or Costco - but I didn't know they offered tours until my in-laws from Japan visited and included it on their list of things to do/see. As I was designated driver, I went along. Glad I did. Kenta, our tour guide, did a great job explaining how wood decomposing mushrooms are grown and harvested and how the proper growth substrate was developed. He also spoke Japanese, which helped. We saw the grow rooms and saw the harvesting and packing process. We learned how they ship to top restaurants all over Hawaii. This tour won't come close to a visit to Waipo Valley or Hawaii's many waterfalls, but its a great way to spend an hour or so on the Hamakua coast.

My parents and husband and I went on the tour yesterday. It was worth every penny! We learned so much about mushrooms. It was very informative and relaxing. Kenta, our guide, was very knowledgeable about mushrooms. We learned about the entire mushroom life-cycle. We got to taste the mushrooms at the end of the tour. It was a great experience!

If you enjoy mushrooms, or just want to learn about how they are grown, don't miss this fun and educational tour at the Farm. It's an easy place to find, and takes you to the lovely north east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. For twenty bucks (or less, depending on age), you are treated to a complete tour of the processing, growing, and distribution arms of this Mom and Pop company. A small tasting is included at the end, with the ability to buy fresh mushrooms and products. The young man hosting the tour was very knowledgeable and gave us several culinary tips. These Hamakua Mushrooms are only available on the Islands and are used by Chefs throughout the Islands, as well as sold in stores, including Costco. Great 70 minute tour in an indoor factory setting, with easy access.

My wife and I enjoy visiting farms and/or food manufacturers in the locales that we visit. We learned about Hamakua Mushroom farm from of a pamphlet that we saw at a tourist kiosk. I was expecting the mushrooms to be growing in a dark, smelly place. Instead, these mushrooms are grown in jars in a lighted area. All of this is explained on the tour. At the end, free samples are given out and you have a chance to visit the gift shop. We left with a pound of fresh mushrooms and a few other goodies. The tour was very interesting and I would definitely recommend it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour (it ended up just being two of us) with our guide Kenta. There was lots of interesting information, great to see the growing mushrooms and some very tasty samples at the end. Kenta was very friendly and answered our many questions about mushrooms growing!

We have been to the islands many times and had these mushrooms on several restaurant menus. They are meaty and delicious, so we were interested in learning how they were grown. We got what we wanted and more. Other reviews have documented the details of the tour, so I won't repeat that. However, I want to note how useful it was to learn the various ways these mushrooms could be cut and prepared (sliced in coins, shredded like beef, cored and stuffed, etc.). And I have been washing mushrooms all my life, only to learn that I should not do that with any mushroom. The prep info was worth the price of admission. It was interesting to know about the trial and error it took to learn how to successfully grow these mushrooms.
