I live on Maui and for years have driven down lower Nahiku Road as a side trip on the way to Hana, but after the Lahaina fire the locals (or at least one of them, a wahine in a truck) are very unfriendly. I would not recommend this road to tourists at this time.

We've visited this spectacular place in 2013 and again in 2018. However, this year, 2023, there were signs telling Tourists to Stay away and "we don't want you here". Road that leads down the road was partially blocked with signage everywhere, making it clear tourists are not welcome. A sign also states the bridge is out. The bridge was also not able to have cars in 2018, but we were able to walk across with no issue. Not sure if the Bridge is actually still out or not.
This was very disappointing as when we were able to visit, it was open land with no homes on a beautiful point. No people to disturb.
Very sad the locals have the power to keep other Americans from seeing a part of our wonderful country. For us, this place was the highlight of the Road to Hana.

We drove almost ALL THE WAY down, then there is a sign saying no tourist, no Covid, and the road is blocked. Road seemed to be getting much more private so we headed back! Who knows who you are dealing it!

This is a beautiful lushly green area with outstanding coastline views at the end. The 2-3 mile road down is mostly one lane, but with far less traffic then the Hana road and should be no problem. Park at the church (unless there are services), the road is closed at a bridge just beyond. It's an easy walk down the pavement from there to the overlook, but don't miss the deep pool and small waterfall halfway down, good for a swim if the stream isn't flowing fast. The overlook has beautiful views of the wild and rugged coast. You can make this side trip in less than an hour and it's well worth it.

The drive from Hana Hwy was maybe 10 mins on Nahiku Rd. We parked at the church area and then another 5-10 mins walk down a path. When we arrived, a sweet dog rushed over and took us down to the viewpoint. She was a wonderful travel guide. The walk was easy enough and we didn’t stay long but was definitely worth the trip off the main road. Beware the many abandoned cars on the side of the road as you drive down. Somewhat daunting!

Easy walk and great view. Little bit of a drive down from the main road. Good picnic spot. Don't need to spend too much time there

Nahiku wayside is down a 2-3 mile road. The road is twisty but having already done most the Hana Road to get here it is no different. Little visited, there is a wonderful view of the coast looking back towards Keanae, and a few other surprises. Drive slow, at the end of road there is a parking area next to the church (except when the church has services) where the school bus turns around. Be respectful of the area and the locals. Park then walk down the road for about a half mile. You will cross a bridge closed to traffic and it looks unsafe, but safe enough to walk on, watch for holes. At the end of the path there is a small park. On one side a waterfall falls into a gulch near the ocean. There are wonderful views of the coastline. Also on the left side maybe 100 feet down a small slope is a pool next to the waves with small waterfall, a wonderful spot probably all to yourself. This is also one of the greenest spots I have seen on Maui. A nice side trip if you have the time.
