David at the San Diego depot went above and beyond to help my daughter and me. We’ve never been to Dan Diego and he helped us get tram tickets to where we needed to go.
We also took the Pacific Surfliner to San Clemente and that was a great experience as well!
Thanks David and the rest of the staff for what you do every day!!

This is the end of the line for the Amtrak Surfliner and it's a nice entry point to San Diego. It's not a huge station, but it has lovely mission-revival architecture with a good amount of seating and a small cafe/sundry store. There is easy access to all the trolley lines, and it's a short walk to Little Italy or the harbor.

I was in San Diego for business and did not have a car, I wanted to find out more information about taking the trolley to the Mexico border to visit Tijuana. I decided to start here at the Santa Fe Depot. I was impressed by the architecture here. One can also catch the Amtrak train from here. The San Diego Trolley also stops here but right next to the depot is the America station which is better to board for going south.
The inside of the depot is looking a little bare and a bit run down. I did get help from a lady who runs the information booth. While I was there, some crazy lady was yelling and screaming at the person at the ticket counter and her voice was echoing all over the building with its tall ceiling. I was going to use the restroom, but it was closed. While I was at the restroom door, crazy lady came over and asked if I was going to use the restroom. I said, "yeah, but it is closed". She suddenly disappeared like a ghost. Weird experience. Anyway, I wish the city would fix this building up, put in a small restaurant or a bar. It would be nice.

Came to catch the Pacific Surfliner - wasn't expecting the building to be interesting but it kind of was with some characterful touches.
Amtrack stored our bags for $10 a suitcase plus backpack whilst we explored further. You need a code from Amtrack to use the toilets. There's not much in the way of facilities (one kiosk/small cafe).

Waited here for our Amtrak train (San Diego to Oceanside) trip to a relative’s wedding. Area was safe and relatively clean. We visited Little Italy (1 stop away via light rail) and bought back a sandwich for lunch. There is a small snack stand at the Depot but we wanted to experience Little Italy. Train ride was beautiful.

During my recent trip to San Diego, I decided to take the trolley back from a day trip I spent in México and the Santa Fe Depot was the closest stop to my hotel. The trolley was fast and efficient. I called for a taxi service, but I did not want to wait around alone at night so I peeked into the Amtrak station and asked if I could stay inside. A lovely security Amtrak security guard waited with me for my taxi to arrive to ensure my safety. My taxi never arrived and she went ahead and helped me find another car service and I wish I had her name because she was soo incredibly kind and cared about my well being. Thank you for being my guardian angel and ensuring my safe travels back to my hotel. Amtrak, you have a wonderful employee at the Santa Fe Depot, she deserves all the accolades and praise possible!

Lovely building that still functions as an operating train station. Organized with some staff available to ask questions. Recommend buying your ticket online if possible. Seemed like a safe place. Train was clean, on time and a pleasant way to avoid the traffic from the SD to OC. This is the last stop southbound and the first stop for the northbound train.

The history here is fantastic. Make sure you walk around and check out the great architecture. Catching the train here is easy whether it's Amtrak or the local trolley. right downtown on the waterfront with lots of parking close by.

We took the train on Christmas Day from north of Los Angeles all the way to the end of the track in downtown San Diego.
The business class section was very nice and they have water and snacks. We took early train to avoid a 6 to 8 Hour drive that many people have told us is now the reality however the freeway did not look too bad early Christmas morning.
There are a large number of people that got on in Los Angeles to come all the way to the last stop in San Diego downtown and thert were also a lot of people as I get on in Anaheim and Fullerton to come to San Diego. It appears that it is a much busier between Los Angeles and San Diego that it’s in Los Angeles Two points north.
We enjoyed the train ride to avoid the road traffic which could have been 6 to 8 hours but was lighter on Christmas Day however going home on the weekend after Christmas I’m sure the freeways will be packed and the train I’ll be a much better option.

How far in advance to arrive with a business class ticket in hand? Which end to stand to board biz class - is there signage for this?

I used to ride Business Class during track season at Del Mar (avoiding crazy crowds). There is no provisions for early arrival at the loading area - you're just part of the crowd, and there is no special area reserved in that respect either. Usually a line will begin to form outside the Depot, but you will not board any sooner than anyone in the line. The car will be marked BUSINESS, and will be located near the engine - the engine may be at the front of the train, or the back. A conductor will quickly direct you if you're unsure or don't see it. There is no signage for Business Class at the general loading area. Have a great trip!

There is a Pacific Surfliner that provides the earliest arrival to Santa Fe Depot on March 17: 6:36 am Departure from Fullerton,
8:55 am Arrival Santa Fe Depot (2h 19m). The last train back on the Pacific Surliner that same day from Santa Fe Depot is: 8:52 pm Departure, and 11:11 pm Arrrival Fullerton (2h 19m). Hope that helps!

I usually show up about an hour to 45 min prior to train departure. There is no assigned seating, so the early bird gets the worm. If you already have ticket in hand, go straight outside and line up for the train. Happy trip :)
