Quartier: Greenwich Village
Did The Gauntlet a while ago. Lots of time-waster puzzles. The theme was unclear and generally all over the place. No efficient clue system, so when we weren't on the right track, the game master just walked in and did the puzzle for us, which takes you out of the setting completely.

We were accused of breaking a prop and were threatened with having to pay for a replacement, when in actuality it fell apart immediately once we touched it.

This is the place where you want to be challenging your minds and your friends working together to get out of the situation that you are given. Our challenge today was The DaVinci room. We almost made it out of the room. Many Clues and challenges make this experience very memorable. Thanks to Alan who runs this awesome experience. At Thriller City you have a choice of themed rooms to challenge your mind. A great bonding experience. We went with coworkers.

I have done over fifty escape rooms and this was the first time that I did a room were the customer service soured the experience of a quality room. First I called and asked how is the parking by the escape room and the replay was: "there is parking on the street ". We got there and due to the angle which we approached the building we could not see the sign hanging outside to know if we were in the correct building.
U walk into the 'lobby' and there is a bench to sit on. No signs inside or designs indicating you are at thriller city. There is a set of stairs going down. At the stairs there after sign saying "
Please wait here. Someone will be with you". I guess it was the owner came upstairs asking::"do you have a receipt?" I told him no. He said "wait here" and walked down the stairs. He came back and said "you are twenty minutes early"and walked down the stairs. I asked if we could use a bathroom as I told him that we drove over an hour to get here and he said "you have to wait".

After waiting and it was time for him to bring us to the room, he lead us to the bathroom which was next to a laundry mat. We went into the lost treasure room which was well designed and looked very nice. We began the room and the worker said "I will be back to see if u need a clue". We needed a clue three minutes later and we had to wait for him to come back. He was running four rooms at one time. He didn't even give us a clue. He just solved a puzzle for us which was a Kool puzzle. We needed him once more so I banged on the door for him to give us our second clue but when he left, he didn't even properly close the final door. It was open. We finished the puzzles and just opened the door. We made a noise as we exited and he ran out saying "hey you did it". We all looked at each other and burst into laughter.

If it were not for the quality design of the room I would give this a poor rating due to the customer service

We made the Gauntlet and Penitentiary our 113th ad 114th escape rooms - so we are escape room enthusiasts and have played rooms all around the world.

First note - the hint system for these rooms is that an employee walks in at 15/30/45 minutes and asks if you need a hint. So this is simply unacceptable - it is not at all immersive or clever and sometimes we prefer to not get a hint as early as 15 minutes but knowing that there is no way to interact until 30 minutes forced our hand...so in one room we took the hint and in the other we did not. Many escape rooms function like a giant speaker phone where the game masters can hear you and you can talk to them - I realize that this can be expensive and prohibited...but seriously no walkie talkies? The time is literally a wind down 60-minute egg time attached to the back of the door.

These rooms are not big but are public rooms - although we have generally had good experiences playing with strangers we are a good team of four and prefer to play on our own - thus we booked both rooms by buying extra tickets to go private.

Gauntlet - the concept, escape the room before a deadly gas pours in. You start in a dark room and need to find a light source...there are actually not that many puzzles in the room and a lot of the time is spent looking for something in particular to cause one of the devices to work...so our first hint was the game master walking in and showing us where it is...quite frankly we would have spent ages finding this un-clued hidden thing but hints should be nudges rather than "here it is". After that the room progressed - one of the clues is revealed when you do a certain thing...given the old school technology is was a bit hard to read, but a clever use of the device. There was one technical area in the second room which should have triggered an effect but it didn't so we thought we were doing it wrong since there was no way to ask we simply kept looking around and waited for the game master who triggered the effect and we could move on...technical glitches like this are frustrating. One of the clues is written on something and it looked like people touched it and removed some of the writing...this caused us a delay of a couple of minutes. We pointed it out the GM who was genuinely interested and pledged to fix it immediately. We were literally one step away from the final exit - so another 30 seconds would have done it. The couple of minutes we burned while the tech failed to fire and to interpret the smudged writing was problematic. If it wasn't for these frustrations the room would have been fairly good.

Penitentiary - this is very simple room. Like most of the time we are in an escape room jail scenario our group was split into two cells. Accordingly we had to work together to help each other without being able to see the other group. So this was mostly a scavenger hunt to find the stuff we needed and there were only a couple of puzzles. There was another piece of tech which did not work as intended - when we were all together we had to figure out how to activate a "device" - we did but when we interacted with it we heard nothing. So we repeated - nothing...another member tried...nothing...hmm maybe we are doing something wrong; but we have all interacted with this kind of "device" all of our lives so what gives? Anyway we tried again...and now..we heard what we needed and escaped.

A minor amount of refreshing would ensure that everything worked and was readable. Also we understand that game masters walking in and giving hints was typical say three years ago - but in 2018 it stands out as "behind the times". Most great rooms are looking for an integrated way give hints and this non-immersive, "hello I am in your room" style is not the industry standard.

Got a deal from GROUPON for a private deal for our party and it was great that we're able to book it last minute as typically there aren't the case for most of these escape room. From the outside, one won't have thought it is escape room with its limited decor. Again, the interior is similar with its exterior, limited decor except for a big round "machine" that's quite catchy.

They are open really early and close quite late; so it fit into our schedule to plan other activities around it and to maximize a day. The place is linked to a bunch of studios and the employee needs to unlock the door for bathroom use.

I believe they have 4 or 5 rooms here; we chose the Da Vinci room. A little discrepancy is that per website; it said this room has 2 hints but we were told only 1 hint when we got there with the 2nd hint in development. Anyhow, the game is well designed; and like the Master Da Vinci himself, the clues found in the one room might not necessary pertain to that room we're working on and definitely important to search everywhere, especially knowing that Da Vinci is a master at hiding things and all.

Overall we had a great time. We were all contemplating when to use the hint since it was only 1 available. There are cameras in the room; so we just had to wave at the camera or say HINT please for the employee to come in. I think if we were given a walkie or if there's a telecom to communicate with us directly; it would have probably saved use a few mins as the employee had to unlock the door to get in.

Will definitely consider returning again to try other rooms or attempt to complete the room itself with a GROUPON deal.

I am an escape room enthusiast and I decided to try this new escape room when finding it online. I booked the "Lost Treasure" room for two in December 2017. When we arrived we were ushered into the room with merely a "good luck" and not much else. I'm traditionally used to a little backstory, rules, and maybe a brief hint to get us going.

Rather than given the opportunity to ask for clues, the "clue master" would periodically walk into the room to check on our progress and ask if we wanted a hint. This was very distracting and took us out of the experience.

The room itself was beautifully crafted and the puzzles were challenging. The environment and set a really important to me as it can either transport you to another place or leave lots to be desired. There were two puzzles that I've never seen in any other escape room, and honestly I was wondering whether they should even be in an escape room to begin with but this did not deter our focus.
