Exploring on a walkabout, as I’m wont to do in my favorite city, I came across this wonderful church. It’s a place to truly discover a pleasant combination of history and design. It’s home of the oldest Methodist congregation in the US, and is a remarkable site to spend a bit of time reading the historical information and gazing at the pretty architecture.

We got lucky and a gentleman was locking up the door but let us in and gave us a tour and explained some of the history of JSUMC.

Iglesia metodista en la zona del One Trade Center. Se puede visitar sin problemas, y es la clásica iglesia que uno ve en las películas. Para detenerse unos minutos y seguir.

As the oldest Methodist congregation is America, John Street has an interesting collection of artifacts and documents on display, but the church is still a vital part of the spiritual life of the neighborhood. We attended a Sunday morning service with excellent music and lingered afterward to visit the museum. While you're there, go around the corner for a great view of the new Calatrava transit center.

This church is located just down John Street from One World Trade Center. Philip Embury, an Irish Palatine, preached his first sermon in America to five people in his home in 1766. By 1768 Wesley Chapel on John Street was dedicated with over 400 people attending. The current building, built in 1841 houses a museum as well as a thriving congregation. We we fortunate be be there for the "Wonderful Wall Street Wednesday" praise service from 12:15 to 12:45 pm. In addition to the church and museum there is a beautiful courtyard and garden--a great place to sit and relax in the City.
