Absolutely lovely museum covering the history of the end of slavery and Civil Rights Movement. Had no idea about some of what the museum mentioned in the exhibits - e.g. the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to those states that succeeded, ergo it wasn't until the following year that all were freed in the state of Maryland.
A must visit for any history buff. Located a short 10 minute walk along the waterfront from the inner harbor.

Located in the heart of Downtown Baltimore, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum is a top-shelf experience depicting the history and culture of African American Marylanders. The museums permanent collections display the soul of this culture through artifacts, documentation, photography and art. My exploration though the collections was enlightening but I was brought to my knees with my interpretation of the slavery documentation which outlined heart-wrenching stories of their plight........we are so lucky.

Lots of important information here with special attention to Baltimore-specific history. Definitely reading-heavy with respect to the presentation of information, and given the quiet and reflective sort of atmosphere this museum is definitely better for older youth and adults. Leave the little kids at home. The highlight for me was definitely the art exhibit on the second floor. Very impactful. For a reasonable $12 entry fee, I would certainly stop by if you’re in the area.

As this was my first visit, I am not certain if this museum was a victim of the pandemic or of the lack of funding provided to Arts and culture, Whenever I visit aloacl museum, I want to be transported back in tie to absorb what it would have been like had I been there. Let's just say, there is nothing that I got at this museum that I could not have gotten fro a general google search of Maryland history. It shared no poorly kept Baltimore of Maryland secrets. Harriet Tubman is a native daughter of Maryland, but she was just a passing billboard on the tour. So don't try to learn more any unearthed tales about other Native sons like Thurgood Marshall, you won't find them here. They made an effort at showcasing a local art competition.. But let's just say, a local high school would have done a better job showcasing these artists. SMH, But to be fair.. If you are unfamiliar with black History in general and know nothing of the Black eperience in Maryland, this Museum does do an adequate job of introducing you to local heros and juxraposing them to other blacks throughout the country.. (providing they have fixed the inactive exhinits or those closed or inoperable due to disrepair. ) Bring cash.. The credit card reader for the tickets requires that you write down all of your credit card information for later processing.. Not really sure how safe that is.. SMH but you don't need a cash for the gift shop!! The Credit card reader works just fine there,

This museum is a gem located in Downtown Baltimore dedicated to the history of enslaved people with a focus on the mid-Atlantic states. The staff and educational programs are fabulous.

This is an excellent museum. You can tell that every detail was thought out. It has a good combination of historical and contemporary exhibits. I plan to go back whenever there is a new exhibit. It is close to the Inner Harbor, which is another plus. In short: Go.

This was such a excellent experience. I learned so much about black history that I was not aware of. Like who the first black female police officer was, how the blacks formed the unions. There so much information. I loved the souvenir shop which had some excellent children books

My wife and I discovered the Reginald Lewis Museum of African American History by accident. Very glad we did. An excellent museum on the history and contributions of African Americans in Maryland from slavery to the present largely told in photos and text. Well placed artifacts serve to illustrate key points throughout the halls.
Only area for improvement is a better layout of the floors; paths through the exhibits are a bit confusing.

Overall, a very good private museum explaining the plight that slavery marked on the world. The routing of the tour was confusing at parts, but it was a great idea during COIVD-19. I especially like the route to freedom portion. My wife and I learned a great deal. I felt the last section was somewhat of a let down as it explained stories about real people and then asked whether or not they made it to freedom. We either missed the final conclusions or simply could not find them. I was intrigued to see what eventually happened to the people. Nonetheless, a worthwhile experience for a couple of hours.

Sunday was my solo museum day!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Visiting the Reggie Lewis Museum is always important and what a treat it was to see the Elizabeth Catlett exhibit. Catlett was a master painter, printmaker and sculptor and to see her work up close and feel the impact of the material and the simplicity was a powerful emotional moment. She was an Activist who used her ART to present the history as she witnessed America in her own lifetime. Her impact of Contemporary art is profound. Her work spans decades and nations and the work stands time. Her work is heartfelt and emotional while it is controlled and by her hand. Each line is a symbol of her skill and she does not waste a stroke..

A late posting as I was traveling off the radar. I did not notice a parking area . I Ubered to and from as I was staying in a downtown hotel.
