My wife & I chose to visit Davenport House during our stay in Savannah for the primary purpose of learning about both the free and the enslaved people who occupied the property in the early 1820s. Instead the half-hour whirlwind guided tour all but ignored the stories of the Isaiah Davenport Family's "below stairs" servants & was overloaded with architectural and building preservation-related commentary. In the defense of the Historic Savannah Foundation, they had just recently completed & unveiled to the local media their restoration of the lower floor spaces where the slaves lived so that area was still omitted from the tour. But our tour group guide had us spend more time outside the home than inside, further diminishing the value of our tour. I hope they consider adding at least another 15 minutes to their future guided tours, to include the living/working spaces of those enslaved by The Davenports and to expand their educational mission beyond its current Mission goal to "interpret the American Federal-style house, and the artifacts within, built by master builder Isaiah Davenport for his household with an emphasis on the years 1820-27."

The guided tour was a learning experience. The house itself is so unique in so many of Davenport's designs. So glad it was saved from destruction.

This is the house that started the restoration and preservation of historic homes in Savannah by a group of women who stopped the demolition of this home. Our guide Carol was friendly and informative. The house is lovingly restored but I found the history of the restoration and preservation in Savannah to be the most interesting. There is a lovely gift shop and a waiting room with historical timelines if you need to wait for your tour.

We appreciated the story behind the donation of this house to be a museum. It's a nice collection; a bit small, but fine for the space. Not worth the separate entrance fee if this is the only thing you do, but combined with the other sights affiliated with it, it is great.

Davenport House Museum is an example of a beautifully restored Federal-style house in the historic district of Savannah. Thanks to the efforts of a special group of women this home built in 1820 was saved to be enjoyed by future generations. One begins a tour in the visitor's area where there is a timeline on display showing the history of the restoration of the home once used as a tenement home. The home actually has its original floors, woodwork and staircase. Davenport House proudly sits on Columbia Square.

I’m glad we visited this house. If you are a fan of history and architecture then check this out. So many stories and Jeff telling them was wonderful.

Out of all the house tours we did in Savannah, it was the best! The house itself was beautiful! Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly! It was by far my favorite house tour!

Many of the tours mention the well-known house tours, but this one I found while researching home tours in Savannah. On our last morning in town we had a couple hours left and I’m embarrassed to say this now, but we figured this was a good filler tour. OH HOW WRONG WE WERE! This was one of two AMAZING home tours we had in the five days we were there (Green Meldrim House being the other). This house started the preservation movement in Savannah, and the history record of this house is superb. Our tour guide was awesome, bringing the stories of the Davenports to life in such detail that you leave feeling as though past and present melded. Mr Davenport was an exceptionally skilled carpenter and used his home as a model for clients. The story of his wife Sarah is fascinating. I can’t remember the lady’s name (in blue in the photos) but she was amazing!!! Don’t miss it!!!!

Enjoyed the tour of this home. So much history there. Our tickets were bought in a historic building (an old drug store) behind the house. While waiting for the next tour, you could read about the home and area.

This house, built by Isaiah Davenport who was a master builder, was an interesting contrast to the Owens Thomas House, built at roughly the same time but for a much wealthier family. However, I thought it was similar to many old homes you could visit and tour - good if you're in the area, but I would not make it a special trip.
The tour was a little over 30 minutes. Our docent was very friendly, but I didn't learn very much - much of the tour was about the Davenport family, but not as much about the historical or architectural context of the home.

Hi, is it hard to hear docent giving the tour since they are required to wear masks right now? Thanks!

I would say, on an average between 30 to 45 minutes. It is not a huge house, and the timing would depend on who was assigned to you as the tour guide and how much information they are able to share. They also have a small and quaint gift store for you to browse thru after the tour.
