We came to see the 3D representation of Savannah. Little lights in the model show where all the fires were. Interesting to learn more about the squares and the progression of development. I wish there would have been more about docks and piers. There were maps showing the original layout of the town. I think the city model is not being used to its full potential. So many more stories about early Savannah. We wondered where the battle was in relationship to the early town. One room had beautiful ship models and a nice map of the river on the floor. Ships wheel is a good photo oportunity. Museum is in an antique school. The classroom is recreated on the second floor if you find that interesting. We didn't. A trip to the restroom took us out into a lovely patio area. Enjoyed that. Again - There is more potential in that courtyard. Thanks to the man at the desk. Very helpful.

Perfect place to start your visit to Savannah - the 3-D map of the town was amazing, and helped us with our navigation for the day's events. The room dedicated to architecture was perfect to refer back to as we looked at the buildings in town later - we could appreciate the different construction styles that were used.

The docent was super helpful, answering all our questions with patience and understanding. She knows Savannah well, from it's history to it's current time.

The fact that the school was used as a hospital for awhile was also fascinating, and looking at the antique treatments used made us glad we live in the 21st century!

The way the story unfolded as we walked through the old school gave us such a wonderful picture of colonial Savannah. Seeing the classrooms and even reading the "rules for teachers" gave us plenty to think about how different our culture is now!

This is a hidden gem. I was so impressed with the interactive nature of the exhibits...kept the kids and adult entertained and learning. I believe that Sherry was our guide. She was a fountain of knowledge and I could have listened to her for hours! She made historical Savannah come alive. Best tour we're had in Savannah.

This was a nice surprise we toured after Gray Line guide recommended. Interesting historical details presented in descriptive photo collections in the large staircase, be sure to read as you climb the stairs to the classroom.

Our tour group visited here in May. The guides were very good about providing the history of this place and they have a lot of the artifacts from that period. Definitely worth a visit.

Warmly greeted by a staff person. I was fortunate to be there when a tour group came in and got to listen to a knowledgeable docent explain Savannah's early history and its layout, using the excellent 3-D model of the city. Upstairs, we sat in an old classroom and another knowledgeable docent explained the school's history and how it fits into the city's and nation's history. Also, great exhibits (self-guided tour) on Native Americans, ships, and Savannah architecture. Quiet garden out back.

We stumbled on to The Massie Heritage Center and were met with a fantastic couple of hours! The Center has many wonderful, and diverse, exhibits. It should be the first stop if you are interested in Savanah early history, as well as present-day ventures.
Our docent, Karen Clark, was excellent. She knew the exhibits well, the history, and current issues. She fielded many questions from us and was able to handle them all well. Don't miss out on a great experience.

I waited till later in my trip to visit the Massie Heritage Center, and realized quickly I should have started here. They tend to emphasize their role as a public school, but really should more prominently highlight their exhibits on Savannah architectural styles, the incredibly important role of historic preservation in today’s heritage tourism, and their large model of historic Savannah with light show! Going through these galleries help you better understand the history and architecture of Savannah as you wander around. I was also able to tap into the extensive knowledge of a fabulous docent (and I apologize for not writing down your name!), who added much to the exhibits. You can also hop off here if you start with a trolley tour. Highly recommend.

This museum is housed in the city’s first school building. There are several rooms highlighting different areas of interest (architecture, maritime, Education), and a recreated period classroom. We were fortunate to have the guide all to ourselves and she gave a very interesting, informative talk.
