You must go! We opted for this location as it had good reviews and a lenghtier experience. Some other places offered 15-20 min rides. This location had extra hats/boots/gloves to give you if you weren't well dressed. They also allowed you to meet their dogs and pet them before the ride, taught you and let you harness some dogs and showed you how to attach them to the sled. The dogs were all really friendly and thought the website warns they could be energetic and jump on you and stuff it was a lot less than I had expected. Our own dog jumps more/higher than these. They are very well trained and happy. Then you get to either ride sitting in the sled/take photos/videos as you ride, or you can stand in the back and help a bit with the driving (breaking and stuff). I was a little nervous about the back but it was a lot easier than I thought! On the way back you can switch so you get both experiences. They stop at beautiful viewpoints and take photos of you which were great. Such a lovely experience and I learned a lot! Thank you Kelsie and Katti-Jo!

This was a once in a lifetime experience for my wife and me. The hosts were incredibly friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. The dogs and the way they're trained are nothing less than amazing. If a dogsledding tour is on your bucket list, Black Spruce is the place to go. 10/10 recommend.

We live in Fairbanks and went to Black Spruce Dog Sledding with some friends who were visiting from out of town. This experience was by far one of the best things we've done here. The whole crew was amazing and very informative. Loved how they educated us about the dogs and sleds and gave us time to interact with the dogs before and after the tour. The tour itself is one of the longest in the area. Highly recommend!

Black Spruce dog sledding was amazing. I love how involved they let you be. Learning how to hook up the dogs and their harnesses and all their names helped to make the experience really special. It was a beautiful location!! The dogs were all very friendly and happy to give us doggie love. Our guides were great at helping us take pictures to remember the experience. I highly recommend!

We had an amazing time! The guides made sure we had the best experience! We absolutely loved playing with the dogs and learning about their sport! Dylan was our guide, and he was phenomenal! He even took pictures and videos for us and made sure we were comfortable and warm. This experience was definitely the BEST thing we’ve done in Alaska, and I am so glad we chose Black Spruce for our adventure!

I had such an amazing time ! The crew is very welcoming and nice - you feel right at home ! The drive was really pretty! You arrive, pet the dogs , get to know them , ride for a good time through a beautiful forest and then come back to good convos and hot chocolate! Our dog musher Miguel was very knowledgeable and he was constantly making sure we were good with the cold and snow. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I have lived in Alaska for 19 years and I can’t believe I waited this long to go dog sledding. This experience is at the top of my list of things I have done in Alaska! Amazing view, the guides were incredible knowledgeable, accommodating and very kind. They were even able to accommodate our large party of 7. I can’t wait to go again!!!

They were very generous and took their hands out of their gloves to take photos of us. But everyone should bring their own hand warmers.

Unlike other dog sledding vendors, who might have a little area to take you around in a circle, this company uses State and Federal open land to take you out into the wilderness. We had the pleasure of riding with the owner, Jeff, who has completed the Iditarod 8 times! He was a wealth of information and made our day with my two little girls (ages 8 & 10) so special. I HIGHLY recommend this business.

A truly memorable and unique experience! If 6-Star review was allowed we would give one!
From the moment we arrived to the time we left we felt welcomed, informed, cared for and like we received an incredible value.
From the hot cocoa to Koya (the wise old doggie inside the shack), and from "riding" in the sled to "driving" it, it felt like a truly unique and blessed experience that we all cherished as a highlight of our journey.
We saw a lot of people on the plane and in the airport with dog sledding pictures as we flew home, and not one of them provided an opportunity to get so close to all the dogs, to meet and pet each one if you wanted, to play with the next generation of pups and to actually get the opportunity to drive one of the sleds. We shall return, thank you Back Spruce fam!!!

Traveling with 70 parents , they are in decent shape, think they would be ok to participate?
Rédigé le 29 mai 2021
Yes, I am certain they could attend and choose not to stand up in the sled.

I plan on traveling to Fairbanks in mid-September 2019. Is there usually snow in September? Thanks.
Rédigé le 14 juin 2019
Hi, I'm not too sure. I was there in January, lots of snow then! . Best to email Black Spruce and I'm sure they will get back to you.

Hi
Coming over from Australia in April, will there be enough snow to do sledding?
Rédigé le 15 mars 2019
Hi Melanie,
It really depends on when in April you will be coming. Typically we still have enough quality snow for dog sledding at the very beginning of the month, but by the middle/end of April all the snow starts to "rot" and we can do longer go mushing. Please send us an email or look online for more info.

I have back issues (disc problems). Are these rides “rough”?? Would not like to hurt myself. Thanks
Rédigé le 6 février 2019
It could be a problem if your issues are serious. You can always sit and enjoy the ride.
Rédigé le 13 février 2019
Hi can you tell me what time of year did you go
Rédigé le 6 août 2018
Is there a place or anything that I could sit back and enjoy the ride without having to control the dogs? I’m going with another person and we want to just sit and enjoy the ride.
Rédigé le 17 janvier 2018
You don't ever really "control the dogs" while on the sled. With our tag-sledding experience you are mostly in control of your own self and your own sled. The guide has 99% control of the dogs, although we will occasionally get your help to slow/stop the dogs by directing you to use the drag/brake on your sled. Most people do think tag-sledding is the best and most exciting part of touring with us, and is the reason we are one of the most popular touring companies in Fairbanks. But if you're feeling nervous about it should absolutely book your tour with another company.

What is the easiest way to get out here in December?
Rédigé le 27 novembre 2017
Hello! This is KattiJo Deeter, the owner of Black Spruce Dog Sledding.
We STRONGLY encourage all of our visitors to rent their own vehicles for getting to/from our facility. It's about a 45 minute drive from downtown Fairbanks (maybe a little longer if you're new to winter driving). The roads are usually pretty good (unless we've had a very recent snowfall) but you do need some good ol' common sense, a sense of adventure and an all-wheel drive or four wheel drive vehicle is SUPER helpful as well. If you must rent a two-wheel drive car, please use Alaska Auto Rental as they winterize all of their vehicles. Other companies like Enterprise and Avis do not winterize their vehicles. They keep bald, summer tires on their cars all year long and you probably won't make it to our place in winter in a small car with summer tires.
We do not advise hiring a taxi or using a service like Uber/Lyft. These tend to be VERY expensive - especially in winter - and unfortunately the drivers are not always reliable. If you do decide to go this route, be sure you get a quote from your driver before you book your tour with us. Let them know we are located 25 miles northwest of Fairbanks, in the Murphy Dome area, and that you will need their service for about 4 hours. That's an hour drive time each direction and a two hour wait at our facility for you to take your tour.
For more information on getting to our place, and some winter driving tips, check out the section on our website called "Driving + Dressing" (Sorry I can't include a URL link here due to posting restrictions from Trip Advisor.)

We will be in Fairbanks on June 1 & 2 and are getting a rental car. If we drive to Black Spruce Kennels for the 8 pm dog sled ride, what else is in that area that we can do?
Rédigé le 5 mai 2017
Really nothing but the drive and view are amazing. It does not take very long to get there from town.

This summer (2017) we will be offering both a dog mushing experience using our 5-passenger buggy, as well as a "husky hiking" experience! For detailed information and photographs please check out our company's website (Black Spruce Dog Sledding). Unfortunately I cannot provide a link here as per Trip Advisor posting regulations. But if you search for Black spruce Dog Sledding Summer Tours in google you will easily find the page. Our website is very clean and easy to use. On the site you will also find a live, interactive calendar through which you can book your tour. Thanks!

Is this tour good for kids? We are looking at the scenic dog sled tour with out 7&10 year old children in December.
Rédigé le 10 octobre 2016
Absolutely. I would talk to the kids in advance about waiting until they're told by Jeff that it's okay to approach the dogs and be aware that they are very excited pre-run. They're calmer afterwards and easier to handle but there are still some that may be nervous around strangers. And the puppies are wonderful!
