The Brooklyn Historical Society has now been rebranded as the Center for Brooklyn History - I'm not quite sure of the point of the distinction. The website is unhelpful in making clear what there is to see, mentioning tours of the exhibition (called "Brooklyn is...") but not the exhibition itself. Because of this I wasn't going to make the effort to go there but then I happened to walk past when the building was closed and enjoyed reading the information boards which stretch around the building and include quotations from modern Brooklyn residents but also details of the borough's history and reproductions of old maps, census data and other historical documents. It said that there was more exhibition material to see inside so I went back a few days later and allowed a couple of hours for my visit. However, the "exhibition" inside is basically non-existent (perhaps why it doesn't feature on the website). There are a couple of reproductions of old documents on the walls of the big ground floor room, but mainly photos and quotations from current residents. Upstairs is the absolutely beautiful wood-panelled Othmer Library - stunning, but not worth a special trip. You can take a photo from inside the door but it is a library in use by researchers. Also on that floor was a very small room with old paintings of the Brooklyn shoreline (that was interesting) and 2 small display cases showing the designs of 19th century book covers. There is a very small shop but a lot of the items sold aren't particularly relevant to Brooklyn. I would have expected more books about the history of the area. I saw everything easily in well under an hour.

As of September 14, 2023 the Center for Brooklyn History (now part of the NYPL system) has reopened after renovations!
This isn’t the fanciest or biggest library, but it has a beautiful research library and all the librarians and staff are super nice and helpful.
Plenty of great architecture. Not just the research library, but their main staircase and the brick and moulding outside.
They have temporary exhibits as well as many fascinating speakers and programs.

One winter afternoon we visited the Brooklyn Historical Society out of curiosity as my wife is a Brooklyn native. Those not affiliated with Brooklyn will obviously not be impressed with the displays however those with a serious appreciation for history and architecture will be thrilled. I spent as much time examining the building as I did the displays
Current times often dictate excitement and stimulating displays which this is not nor was ever intended to be. Rather the Society is a historical repository of Brooklyn History. Notice that this is a society, not a museum.

I went and there seemed to nothing there other than two exhibits and a huge library.

I expected to see exhibits chronicling the founding and rise of Brooklyn as a major city in the world. You know, artifacts from Ebbits field, Coney Island, The Battle of Brooklyn. As the cop at the crime scene said, move along, there's nothing to see here.
Except the lovely library. And the building is lovely.
Just call me disappointed.

A good place to spend an hour or two. Levy photographs and the role of Brooklyn in the world of medicine were interesting, but there seems to be a lot of empty space in the building.

The Brooklyn Historical Society is a wonderful resource for research and a beautiful building. But keep an eye on their public programs, usually evening lectures or book talks on diverse and topical subjects, offered at minimal cost. This institution is fabulous!

A museum with a wealth of historic and significant exhibits. Definitely worth allocating at least an hour to enjoy this. Staff are helpful too and the library is memorable. There is a shop but not a cafe.
