I took a group of 12 friends to SL#3 with Sally Asher as our guide. Learned so much and really enjoyed the visit. Everyone was impressed by her knowledge and she was patient with our many questions (we are not Catholic nor from NOLA). The history, meanings of the tombs and symbols used, and various people interred there were most interesting. Highly recommend!!

We stopped here on a tour. If it wasn't for the commentary of the guide, I wouldn't have appreciated it as much.
There are tombs for mostly families, but some for occupation, priests, homeless, etc.

We were fortunate to have the incredibly well-informed and fun guide Sally Asher. Clearly very passionate about the history surrounding New Orleans cemeteries and the history of those buried there. Would really recommend asking for her if possible!

If you visit New Orleans you must visit one of the Cemeteries that are above ground. I would highly recommend a tour. Very informative. The cemetery with its beautiful white marble tombs are very impressive. Very walkable area. Very respectful and peaceful place. Impressive marble work! The tombs are owned either by families or groups - such as Little Sisters of the Poor. On the outside of the tombs are the names of the many people who are buried in that tomb. Yet there is only enough space for maybe 2-3 coffins. According to our guide a deceased person's coffin can only be guaranteed a spot in the tomb for a year and l day. If someone dies after that time period the deceased person's bones are respectfully removed and put in a special bag and the bones/bag are then placed in a compartment under the tomb. That is how so many people can be buried in one tomb. I thought that was amazing. Well worth the visit.

At the end of the line for the red trolly. Get off to the right, cross the bridge and it’s on the right side of the street. Paul Prudhomme is buried here.

Large cemetery full of various characters important to New Orleans and the world as well.
It is fully gated, with only one set of gates to access the cemetery.
There is a huge multi-level water fountain on the inside that has a cute row of plants on the inner ring.
Right inside the main gates, you'll see Mother Theresa and Padre Pio's statues.
Continue on and you will see various crypts in all materials, sizes and level of decay.
Lots of various mausoleums, including Lady Skelly.
There are also rows along the sides of the cemetery that I believe are of the people affected by plagues and such.
Some relatives have paid to keep maintenance up of headstones and crypts, so you'll see markers at the front of them in the sidewalk. They'll say "Perpetual Care" I believe, or something similar.
Fully paved although many parts aren't even so be careful.
Lots of shady and full sun areas.
We looked up a couple people, which came up fairly easy on Google.

It may seem unusual to review a cemetery as an "attraction" but St Louis Cemetery No 3 is certainly worth including on any tour you may be making of the city of New Orleans. Although, the cemetery can date its origins back to 1848, work did not actually start on converting the ground into a cemetery until 1854. Today, the result is a feast of closely built marble and stone above-ground tombs which are really works of art themselves. Among the larger, unusual, tombs are the tombs of Servants of The Holy Eucharist, the Little Sisters of the Poor the the Skeloly "Castle" Tomb. There are, also, some interesting statues including Padre Pio and Saint Teresa.

We visited here as part of an excellent tour of the city. It is fascinating that all of the tombs are above ground, because of the risk of flooding. Some tombs are very elaborate. Unfortunately, some have been neglected. The talk was very informative.
