We had some pretty shocking weather for our visit (thank you Jorge!) But managed to drive over to muckross head for a quick walk before the worst of the wind! The drive over was on pretty narrow winding roads but it was a lovely place for a walk and it certainly blew the cobwebs away! The scenery on the drive there and back from killybegs was really gorgeous!

Came here on a holiday in January and loved every minute. Great views but one should take care on the roads. My biggest regret was that I couldn't stay longer.

well worth the detour to look at Muckross Headland. Spectacular views. It was very windy the day we were there so be careful.

This was a photo op type of sight on our way to visit the Sliabh Liag Cliffs. This headland has two beautiful beaches. The Trá na nGlór in Irish, or “beach of the noise”, and Trá Bán, “white beach”. The area is characterized by plunging hillside grassland and horizontal layers of sandstone. As advertised, I agree it is truly a hidden gem.

The attached photos speak for themselves 😁 Great beach & rugged scenery. Views of Slieve League in the distance. Very disappointed that our beautiful beaches in Donegal was omitted from TripAdvisor's best beaches in Ireland. It's difficult to review a lot of our beaches when your website doesn't know of them or even recognize the names. This area of Donegal Coastline is second to none. Highest cliffs in Europe & difficult to find out proper information on your site. This area is definitely worth a visit. Situated in South West Donegal - check out Wild Atlantic Way fb page.

Should I or shouldn't I? That was the question I had to ask myself when it came to writing a review for Muckross Head. Part of the beauty of this little gem is the fact that there are no crowds or coaches to muck things up. It's location is off the beaten path, but easy to get to.
If you are coming from the direction of Slieve League (i.e. from the west), you'll most likely come in through Kilcar and Towney. It's a nice drive with a pull off that looks down onto Muckross Head and Beach....definitely worth a stop. If you're coming from, say, Donegal (from the east), you'll come in via Killybegs and Shalvey (among others). This direction is the more rugged, adventurous way....fantastic scenery.
When you get to the end of the head, there's a car park and several foot paths that lead out to the edge. There's no admission fee. Make sure you walk around the entire area. Also, if the surf isn't up, and you want walk around the lower part (under the cliffs, looking up at them), the best way to get there is to go around to the right of the head (looking at the sea)...the rocks sort of cascade, and you can easily navigate down to the lower part.
To see the entire area, including the lower part, plan on about an hour. As far as safety, a little common sense goes a long way. Pets and children should be kept in check the entire time. It's a shame to have to say that, but the world is full of stupid people.
To date, we've been to over 60 places and sites in Ireland...this ranks near the top of our favorite hidden gems list. Sadly, most people will drive right by without ever knowing what they're missing.

Well worth visiting. Driving not for the feint to heart, but the sheer beauty of the place will keep you going, On a clear day one can see all of Donegal Bay, and across it as far as Benbulben (Mtn) in Co. Sligo.
