This hike has more to do with seeing a small canyon carved by a stream and getting to the bottom of it and back, crossing several tiny bridges along the way and stepping through very tall grasses at the wetter base of the canyon.
In total, it’s 2.62 miles (on my Garmin), with an elevation gain of 570 feet (at this altitude, you should be careful). The sign estimates it takes about 2 hours. I was able to walk it in 40 minutes. The last 0.75 miles is flat and paved and has some traffic on it so beware. It was a great way to stretch my legs after a long drive. Water was still trickling at the end of August when I was there. Very small trickle but nice to hear, nevertheless.
There are no cliff dwellings or petroglyphs to see here – only nature. Still worth it in my view but if you don’t have a lot of time in Mesa Verde, I’d skip it. Didn’t meet a soul through this canyon. Fantastic to be able to avoid the crowd while in nature.

Everyone seems to take the petroglyphs trail, but we don't like crowds so we took the trail less traveled. After a long and pretty steep descent along a number of switchbacks, the trail levels out along the canyon floor. Then you start the slow climb up and out. It is a pleasant hike with sections that are strenuous at times. As long as you take your time, it is very nice.
We took the route clockwise which is the preferred way. It would be difficult to find the trail head going the other way. You also should sign in at the trail log, so if there is any issue the rangers can find which trail you took.

FOR THE RECORD: a number of the reviewers here are not reviewing the actual Spruce Canyon Trail. Many of them are reviewing a very short paved trail that goes from the museum down to "Spruce Tree House". The overview heading of "THREE MILE FLAT TRAIL" is ABSOLUTELY WRONG! This trail is generally done as a loop, more often in a clockwise direction, I believe, starting near the museum or the "Spruce Tree House". This is the only ruin you will see along the way and it was closed when I went. Hikers proceed past a barricade along the trail to this ruin and descend into a canyon a short distance to a trail junction where there is a trail registry log. The alternate trail is the Petroglyph Point Trail. There are about two miles of hiking inside the canyon and if you are completing a loop to the museum or to your vehicle in a parking lot you will walk approximately three miles with the final .75 mile or so being a flat paved trail along the road. BUT TAKE NOTE: the climb out of the canyon when hiking in a clockwise direction is quite strenuous. Here are the numbers. The entire climb from the bottom of the canyon floor measured 1.20 miles and had 465' of elevation gain for a 7.3% gain. This in and of itself is not too bad but BEWARE: the upper section of .43 mile has a 281' gain for a 12.4% grade. This is more extreme. And there are a couple of very short sections within this one that are steeper. And this is the part of the trail where some reviews (I read them all) stated that there are loose rocks. Footing is tricky in many places. If you are not fit, unsteady on your feet and/or not acclimatized to the altitude (generally 6500'-7000' on this trail) YOU WILL BE SERIOUSLY CHALLENGED. My descent from Spruce Tree House measured .83 mile with a 407' elevation loss for a 9.3% grade and the overall grade is more even than on the opposite side and the trail is in better condition (no loose rocks) so I think it may be easier to hike this loop in the opposite (counter clockwise) direction. There is a stream bed in the canyon but the stream is seasonal and you are not likely to see any water during the summer. The descent from the museum crosses the stream bed on three or four footbridges. With all the advisories being stated, I must say that this is actually a nice little trail if you are up to the challenge. Lightly used; I saw only eight hikers. Lots of trees and shrubbery on the canyon floor. It would be nice to see it when there is water in the stream. The only wildlife that I saw were lizards and I did not see any signs of larger animals; no scat or tracks from deer or coyotes. Okay, all the usual advisories apply here: check the weather, sturdy hiking boots, carry water and trail food, cell phones don't work, etc. For those who read to the end I apologize for the length of the review but I feel obligated to correct misconceptions put forth in earlier reviews and to back up my observations with data from my own GPS track. Happy hiking.

The Spruce Canyon trail was closed due to rock falls, however the overlook is easily accessible from the parking lot. It is close to restrooms, the cafe and a museum which is worth visiting as well.

Take plenty of water and check the weather. The walking underfoot is quite good, but the elevation is 700 foot down, and then back up! There is a sign in spot at the beginning of the walk, and the way is clearly marked, but I found the ending a little confusing and ended up climbing through the wooden fence at the terrace. I didn't know where I could sign to say I had completed the walk and had returned safely. I guess if my car was still in the park four hours later, someone might have looked for me,

The Spruce Canyon trail is not just the short walk to Spruce Tree House, assuming Spruce Tree House is open, which is was not in April, 2016. The actual trail is a fairly demanding 2.4 mile hike down into the canyon and back up, on an unpaved trail.
The trailhead is off the paved path, past the temporary partial barrier and sometimes gated. Register at the museum before hiking. See photos for examples of trail conditions.

Hiked this trail with my three teenage daughters! It is way down into a canyon with bueatuifull old growth trees and a trail built by the CCC in the 1930s. This is definitely a highlight of our spring break vacation. Have good hiking shoes and be ready for the steep climb out of the canyon! A great place for reflection and connection to the best things the park has to offer beyond the phenomenal archaeological sites.

This is the second time I've hiked this trail, I can't put my finger on it but there is just something about this canyon that calls to me. I love this place!
