I stopped into Trinity Episcopal Church while we were downtown, and my wife was checking out the stores. It is a wonderful old church located in the heart of downtown. It was great that it was open and I could go inside.
Founded in 1698, it is the oldest Episcopal parish in the state. In the mid 18th century, the church was home to the largest Anglican congregation in New England.
The current Georgian building was designed by architect Richard Munday and constructed in 1725–26. It one of the largest extant 18th century New England churches and has been designated a National Historic Landmark since 1968.

Another nice church. Interesting architecture, worth visiting. A gentleman was there to tell us the history and answer any questions. We walked here - just a short distance from Perrotti Park where our cruise ship tender dropped us off.

Interesting piece of American history. Visit this lovely church and its unique architecture. Sit in the pew where Queen Elizabeth, Desmond Tutu and George Washington sat for services.

We attended Sunday worship and were delighted with the beautiful historic space. The congregation was most welcoming to visitors and the choir was exceptional, performing liturgical music that spanned several centuries.

Wonderful old church located in downtown Newport. Dave was the docent on duty when I visited, and gave an excellent tour of the church. Highly recommend if you are interested in Newport history, esp. if you are Episcopalian or Anglican.

Look for the box seats (#81) where President Washington and Queen Elizabeth sat when they attended church service here. This church is unique as it is set up unlike other churches with the pulpit and pews arrangement are different.

Beautiful church worth seeing in the center of Newport. It is one of the oldest church built in the United States. An easy spot to visit.

You probably will walk right past it many times are walking Newport. Stop and read the stones. Found one that was there 50 years before the US was formed.

Definitely a must see church if in Newport! The Tiffany stained glass windows are absolutely spatular! I had the church to myself one Friday morning and the volunteer docent was so knowledgeable about the history of the church. It was fascinating and just a beautiful church.

This church is easy to locate as its close to the harbor on Queen Anne Square. Trinity Church, built in 1725, is totally made of wood. And if you know Boston, it looks similar to “Old North Church.”

Trinity is not overly large. It has held, though, plenty of famous people. Oral tradition has it that George Washington attended mass in this Episcopalian enclave.

Members of the famous Vanderbilt family attended here while vacationing in Newport. The famous Commodore’s Hazard and Mathew Perry attended Trinity. And, finally, the famous artist, Gilbert Stuart—who painted George Washington—went here to name a few parishioners.

What was real fascinating was seeing the three-tiered wineglass pulpit. It is close to the alter, surrounded by box pews.

Outside is a number of “old” graves—one of whom was a 1780 grave of famous French General, Chevalier de Ternay. The French did help the USA in the American Revolution. By the way, the British did use Trinity Church as a garrison for two years starting in 1776.
