One of several mountains in Yellowstone Park. It is in the northern part, close to the Mammoth Hot Springs complex.

Favorite hike of our long trip. It was no joke and the last part had a rock field. The views along the way are incredible; and we had mot of the trail to ourselves. Glad we had poles to hike up and down.

I climbed the Bunsen Peak Trail on a fall day. The round trip is only about 4.5 miles, but most of that distance is slopes and switchbacks totally 1300 feet of elevation gain. This was the largest elevation gain of any trail I’ve attempted thus far. I had little trouble as I took my time and stopped when I needed a breather. The views grow more stunning as you climb. I got a bird’s eye view of Mammoth Hot Springs a few miles away. From the summit, I was able to see for miles in all directions across the vastness of Yellowstone. The prominence of the peak is illustrated by the radio tower that’s been placed there to maintain communications in the park. This is an excellent hike which I would consider moderately strenuous due to the short length. Don’t forget the bear spray as this is grizzly country!

Nice views from the top, quite a climb. This is a scenic spot and gives a 360 degree vantage of the countryside.

Trailhead a couple miles south of Mammoth. Limited parking. Trail itself, only 2.1 miles, was fairly steep and rocky in places. Suggest good hiking shoes/boots, water, trekking poles, and bear spray! Yep, I’ve hiked all over world and bear spray a first. This time not needed but use by others of music, bells, etc. helped. Upshot-no bear! But great time nonetheless!

The Bunsen Peak hike is less than five miles round trip, but be forewarned there is a significant elevation change. That being said, this is probably one of the best bang for your buck hikes that provides excellent views in all directions for the amount of effort involved.

Park at the trail head just South of Golden Gate and work your way up thru a woodsy area that gives fantastic views of Golden Gate itself, the Hoodoos, and Mammoth Hot Springs. I encountered several deer and grouse on the way up. The trail winds up Bunsen and opens up to provide views of Swan Lake Flat and Sheepeater Canyon to the South. The trail gets rocky as you near the top. Pika were scampering about during my visit. A small radio building is located in the uppermost area with a trail log you can write your name in. I'd recommend walking past the radio building to at least the second peak to the East -- this gives you views to the East as well as the chance to see more Pika.

You can return the way you came up or for the more adventurous you can continue/follow the trail East down the backside of Bunsen. This will lead you down the hillside, thru some open burned areas, and thru some new lodgepole pine growth before delivering you to an old roadway/bike trail. The very ambitious can make the hike down to Osprey Falls (trail starts just across the roadway) or if you've had enough turn right onto the road and walk it several miles back to the trailhead.

Overall a very rewarding dayhike in Yellowstone.

We chose Bunsen Peak as our first peak to climb in Yellowstone. It was a great hike. The trail quickly climbs so you great views of the Mammoth Hot Springs. There are several long switchbacks that keep the steepness in check, Due to the elevation, I would rate this a moderate hike. The view from the top is wonderful. To the south the Tetons are in view. to the west Electric Peak, the north the Mammoth area.

Did a fair bit of reading on this heading in as we're not experienced hikers or real super fit. A lot of sites said it's a moderately difficult trail (3/5 bars) and should take 2-3 hours. My party was convinced it would be more like 4 hours. And before I get to far, here's a cool feature: there are communication towers at the top so you'll get a nice signal most of the way up and down.

Turns out the experts were correct. Our teenager with a low pain threshold nearly bowed out about 2/5 of the way up. Once she gathered herself, she was able to make it to the top with and down with no more difficulty. So even with a few stops for pics and breathers on the way up, we made it up and down in less than three hours.

I would think it's a pretty standard hike. Pretty easy at the start but you're climbing quickly so the views are impressive right off the bat. As you get towards the top, the switchbacks begin. There are a few spots with looser gravel but nothing ever felt dangerous. I struggled more with the girls hanging out near the edges for pics along the way, and the top was really windy which never feels good at elevation. It was fun to write in the log book and take our pics with the sign on the cabin at the top!

One of my favorite hikes that we did. Warning do not be fooled by the 2.1 miles one way for 4.2 round trip, the elevation change is significant. It was very very steep. Also there is some lose gravel so could not go fast on the way down for fear of slipping. I 100% recommend the hike just want you to be prepared. If you still want to see the views and cannot do that much elevation go about halfway to the meadow. It’s still very beautiful from there.
