The infamous Monday jam session, lived up to the hype. The laid back vibes to the jams that make you want to dance, the live music was very much appreciated. More so chilled out vibes, with mainly a seated venue to sit back and listen.
I arrived at 22:00, there was one table with seats available, but the main section of the venue was full. I left at midnight, as it got very crowded and I could not see the stage from my seat. Apparently, i was told by a local the next day, the party only got started at midnight.

I've been living in Zanzibar for a while and, whenever I get the chance, I check out some new popular place.

I was invited at Red Monkey Beach Lodge by a friend of mine, musician, who was going to perform one night dedicated to Jazz live performances. That was enough to convince me, so I moved from Paje where I was to the place in Jambiani.

Already at arrival the feeling wasn't right: at the entrance I was stopped with not much of friendliness cause I had to pay an entrance fee. Fair enough, I paid the 10.000Tsh price tag without saying a word, thinking that yes, it's right to pay for live performances, but that price is usually too high to attract local people, which is usually the kind of crowd I like to see in a public place in Zanzibar.

As expected, most of the attendants were white skinned, which is not a bad thing in itself, but a warning sign at least when you are in Africa. The second bad experience I had when I got to know the bar prices: local beers comes for 7.000Tsh, which is so far the most expensive beer I've found in Zanzibar (generally they are sold for 5.000, in some places in Nungwi 6.000Tsh but it's rare).

The live performances were ok, and I have to admit the sound system and acoustics were very good: volume at the right level, good setup, stage of the right size... it's obvious that who did the setup knew what he was doing. In general the look and feel of the place is good, details are taken in cosideration. Maybe a bit too small, but might not be a problem.

The problem to me was the (lack of) atmosphere. I had the feeling there was really not much of Africa going on there... everybody sitting quiet, not many interactions between strangers going on. If I might say, all felt a bit fake and looked quite radical chic, clean cut and boring as hell... really not of my taste, and definitely not Zanzibari.

The final weird moment which set me moving for other destinations I had when, while talking at normal voice level with my friend, we were hushed but who I presume was one of the administrators of the place, in order to let the performer sing without distractions I guess. Well, if I knew I coulnd't even talk freely there, I was not going to pay the 10k, and I would have also saved transportation money.

All in all, I don't want to sound too rough, I'm sure that might be the perfect place for many tourists who are looking for something which feels familiar to a westerner. But if the African feeling is what you're looking for, better if you spend your time and money elsewhere.
