7,367 men are laid to rest here, among them the British, Australians, New Zealanders, Canadians, Indians, Greeks and Polish whose blood stained these sands during those fateful days of 1940/1942. Their memory is honoured in this cemetery.
815 lie with no name. Countless more their bodies have never been recovered and they remain out there in the Egyptian desert.
Just down the street you will find the El Alamein Museum, which details the history of these bloody battles and honours the legacy of the thousands of men who paid the ultimate sacrifice in these terrific campaigns.
"I shall not have died in vain, if you who live be free to live your lives in world-wide unity."

Very moving and sacred place where so many young men lost their lives, true heroes.
Also visit the war museum just down the road. Excellent information and displays.

Unlike so many of these amazing military cemeteries with beautiful grass, this cemetery very fittingly has hard packed sand. Well perfect the time to visit and reflect.

El Alamein is somewhere off the normal tourist places in Egypt but it is certainly worth a visit to see this cemetery and the nearby Military Museum.
The cemetery certainly pays the respect that it deserves and is a perfect follow up to the museum where we can all express our gratitude and respect to the fallen.
The cemetery is well maintained and cared for.

My husband got to visit his great uncle who fought in the battle of Alamein in 1942. Died aged 24 from New Zealand,. Thrrecare many British, Australian and New Zealanders buried here. Well worth the visit to this beautifully kept cemetery. This was made extra special by our guide Rida from Egypt Tour Portal who assisred us to find the grave and provided flowers and prayers 🙏. Such a lovely man who went above and beyond. Thank you for all you have done.

This place is very moving. The rows upon rows represent only some of the thousands who died in this battle, and the many others in North Africa, with many bodies simply lost, burnt or unrecoverable. The place is kept immaculate by the guards and gardeners. Well worth a somber visit.

We hired a Hyundai limo($60) for the 75 mile trip west of Alexandria along the North Coast Highway to this complex of WW 11 cemeteries. 1st was the 1958 Sacred Military Italiano El Alamein with its 100' octagonal tower housing the crypts of 5,200 soldiers. Next was the 1954 Allied El Alamein War Cemetery with its rows of 6,480 graves and also commemorating 11,866 who died in all of the Desert Campaign from Africa and Arabia. Nearby was the El Alamein WW 11 Military Museum with equipment remaining from the 1942 battles between the Axis("Desert Fox" Rommel) vs the Allies(Montgomery).

I didn’t know much about the battles which led to the establishment of this burial site in 1954, but I left with a determination to educate myself. Reading as many as we could of the gravestones, we couldn’t help but be moved by the messages from loved ones, as well as the enormous loss of life among those so young.

Managed to make a quick stop here. It's hard to see from the road and my driver actually passed right by the place twice before we realized where the entrance. I was able to walk around the cemetery and have to say it's pretty amazing.

Visited on the 16th November, no wreaths or any other sign that Remembrance Day had been observed here. The books of remembrance were not present and although it is well maintained and has a feeling of silence the development around the boundary is worrying. I left the cross intended for an individual as a tribute to all.

Hi
I would like to visit my Uncles grave (a British seaman) at El Alamein and wondered which hotels were within an hours drive along the coast from the cemetery? Thank you for your help.

is it safe to visit and how much is it to enter if there is a price

I had no problems whatsoever about feeling secure. The cemetery was not crowded with tourists as it is a distance from Alexandria. I of course had a private driver and guide who spoke fluent English. There is military presence there but I never felt threatened or intimidated that the military was there. Definitely worth seeing the contrasts in the Allies and German cemeteries'. Do not pass up the opportunity to go. I hope this helps.
