One of the finest small museums i've visited in the UK. Looks a small building from the outside but feels very spacious inside with numerous rooms and an upstairs section too. Some great exhibits including the Mattersey Logboat and the museum feels very fresh and bright. Ample toilets, including an accessible one. Garden area to walk around and a seperate pilgrims exhibition. Just off the main road (Grove Street) and free parking for Blue Badge and plenty of parking in Retford which is just a couple of minutes walk away. Free entry although they appreciate donations, staff wonderful and a very enjoyable visit. A hidden gem.

Before you enter the museum spend a few minutes looking at the little display on the steps of hand painted rocks and pebbles with different designs and messages. Once inside I thoroughly enjoyed viewing the different exhibits, especially the World War II section and the vintage games, one of which I still have from a family Christmas four to five decades ago! Some of the art work in the gallery was beautiful and captivating. The agricultural display was interesting and The Pilgrims Gallery was superbly presented with plenty of information combined with an interactive element.

We are regular visitors to this wonderful place and yesterday was our first experience since Covid-19. They have got it organised really well, we felt very safe and extremely welcome by the friendly staff. This is one of our favourite places to go and it was lovely to be there again to experience the beautiful Georgian building, the interesting and varied collections and to see the enthusiastic team who run it. Our grandchildren love the garden and the child friendly events in the education room and hope it won't be too long before they are able to resume. The kitchen room set, schoolroom and the local industrial and agricultural displays rekindle treasured memories for those of us of a certain vintage and trigger the imagination of the little ones. It is great to see the regular themed exhibitions from local artists and reminds us how much talent there is in the area. The Pilgrims Gallery brilliantly tells the story of the Bassetlaw link to the Mayflower Pilgrims and their challenges and triumphs. 2020 is of course the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. All in all this is an absolute treasure and a delight to visit.

Myself and my partner came to Bassetlaw Museum just for a look around when our train was delayed by a significant amount of time. I had wanted to go into the museum previously but have not managed to before. We often travel to Retford to see family and have a five year old so wanted to see if the museum was suitable for him as he loves the museums in London. It was a shame but the museum was small and uninviting. I particularly enjoyed the WW2 themed room but other than that many of the displays were quite uninteresting, and not many staff around so I am not sure if we saw everything! We spend just under 40 minutes in the museum and I felt it such a shame.

A bird watching trip having gone at a nearby site we decided to see what Retford had to offer. Interesting town, interesting churches and a very strong Pilgrim Fathers’s connection that was a great surprise and a delight and the new display on the subject was very well designed and presented and should appeal to all ages. The rest of the museum of more local interest.

Had a lovely visit to Bassetlaw Museum again today.
Really enjoyed the new temporary exhibitions, The Wyse Collection and also the works of Kip and Richard Combes in the art gallery.
Also listened to the knowledgable staff talks on Chinese porcelain and museum conservation techniques.
As always the staff were friendly and welcoming and I will definitely be visiting again soon.

Is this suitable for an elderly father in a wheelchair and if so do you have wheelchairs to borrow ?
Thankyou, K.Wilson.

Hi, the ground floor and pilgrim gallery is accessible but unfortunately due to the nature of the building the first floor is not accessible by wheel chair. There are non to borrow on site. Hope that helps.
