From the Mount Pleasant Complex, it took us approximately 20 minutes to drive to the car park situated a ‘fair’ distance from Bertha’s Beach. We walked about 1.5km to the Beach and then a further 4-5km East along the white sands.
We were eventually accompanied by an active waddle of Gentoo Penguins, entertaining and playful in their natural habitat. We were lucky enough to spot a few Whales as well (very much from a distance though). The walk was certainly worth it!
As for the Beach itself, it was beautiful - untouched and peaceful creating a real sense of solitude. I still find it hard that we were less than just 1000 miles from Antarctica!
Highly recommended for a ‘quick fix’ when it comes to seeing Penguins. I would suggest taking warm clothing and most importantly, as I know this caught out a few people in our group, sensible walking footwear.

Road we traveled to get here was not tarmac. It must have been what we had, not the road, that we were not feeling well when we got here. We left quickly as we did not want to pollute the beach for magnificent creatures.

Taking a local guide, at half the price off the boat. The locals act as a park Rangers to access the beach. Look, don't touch, the birds always are right, this is their home.

What a great day we had at Bertha’s Beach with Rex from Eagle Tours. He is a lovely man and so knowledgeable about the Falkland Islands and it’s history, which helped to make the day so special. The penguins at Bertha’s Beach were just amazing and being able to walk amongst them was very special.

This was beautiful and we did get up-close viewing of the penguins. However, if you must choose one for only one day, choose Volunteer Point. It's hard to get to, but reports were overwhelming about that area. We were VERY concerned about the lack of "policing" of visitors. Many were literally RUNNING after the penguins! :(

Of course this trip occurred the day after our trip to Volunteer Point so that is part of the reason. Bertha’s Beach is a bit closer to Stanley and the off road experience is only about 30 minutes.
Plenty of Gentoo colonies here and a few Magellanic penguins. We arrived and had the beach all to ourselves which was great - the Gentoo’s were having lots of fun running in and out of the water. There are endless beaches for hiking if you have a few hours. Had we not been at Volunteer Point the day before the rating would have been a notch higher...

We had read such good reviews of Patrick Watts tours of Bertha's Beach and the town of Stanley, that we were really looking forward to the experience. As requested by Patrick, we made a special effort to get on one of the first tenders off the Holland America Ship. We arrived on the first tender (around 8:00 am) and were greeted by Patrick. He sent off all the others that had signed up for his tours with their driver/guides but asked us to wait a few minutes since he was going to be driving us himself (we were happy that he would be our guide!) and needed to check in one more group before we left. We then waited 1.5 HOURS before Patrick finally sent us off with a very nice young man named David. David was extremely pleasant, but this was only the third tour he had ever given and didn't have a deep knowledge of either the Falkland Islands or the penguins. We did see penguins, but many of the questions we had went unanswered. He did promise to brush up on his knowledge before our next visit. We went back having seen Penguins, but not knowing much about them or the island they live on.

Beautiful beach that could quite possibly be in the Caribbean, sand is white and thecsea is a tropical view. Very lucky to go when the sea was calm and was, sky cloudless. Gentoo penguins were coming home, arriving in dribs and drabs from the sea, amazing to see in their own little habitat.

A fantastic walk along the beach watching Dolphins. Gentoo Penguins and Two-banded Plovers. Well worth a walk anytime - summer being best

I am interested in booking a Patrick Watts tour to Berthas Beach and was wondering if you have their contact details - either website or email? I couldn't find it when I was looking online. Thanks. Sandra

I'm sorry, but I don't have that info.
Rédigé le 9 juillet 2019
hi, how can I contact Patrick Watts? thanks
Rédigé le 6 octobre 2018
Software won't let me post Patrick's email, but here's how you can construct it.... You need to take Patrick's first initial and last name, and then add the symbol get by shifting 2 on your keyboard. Follow that with the word horizon and a period. Then the 2-letter abbreviation for the state of Colorado, and another period. Finally, add the initials of a person named Fred Kendall.

Can I go by bus or car to mare Harbour and than walk to Berta's beach?
Rédigé le 9 octobre 2016
There are no busses. You'll need to go by car, get the permissions and keys for the gates and drive to the beach.
