It is believed that the Christians in and around Thrissur are converted from Hindu Brahmin community. St. Thomas, the desciple of Jesus Christ is believed to be arrived in many parts of India and in kerala at Kodungallur or Muziris port. He then moved to Palayur, there had an interaction with the local priests called Brahmins. After some arguments about God, most of the Brahmins accepted his teaching and followed Christian faith. There is a historical museum inside the church premises, a pond, different structures made by rock. It is more than a tourist place, just like a historic place with old traditions of ancient Kerala. Can walk out for 3-4 hours.

They have maintained the old structure in a very well pristine condition.. the church and its surroundings gives you a different feel. The pond in which St. Thomas the apostle believed to have baptised many people is still preserved in a very good way..

Palayur or Palayoor is a small village about 35 kms from Trissur. According to tradition,St Thomas ,one of the disciples of Jesus Christ, arrived in Kodungallur and traveled to Palayur where he found people doing pooja in a pond by throwing water up. St Thomas performed a miracle of staying the water in the air .Many of them believed in St Thomas and converted to Christianity. The pond ,known as Thaliakulam is maintained for visitors.
The church is considered to be the first in India and the originality is preserved with repairs. The original cross is preserved inside the new cross in the church ; we were told.Regular services are held in the church.
A lot of sculptures, depicting many miracles performed by St Thomas are placed in the compound .A book shop with many books on St Thomas is also available near the church.
Bottukulam is where St Thomas landed at Palayoor. There is a huge sculpture of St Thomas of 45 feet high ,and a boat at the Jetty.
A museum of articles found during excavations is also there, near Bottukulam for visitors . A nominal fee of Rs,5.00 per head each, is charged for Thaliakulam and Bottukulam. Tickets are to be puchased from the Book Store
Kochi is the nearest airport. Palayour is about 80 kms from the airport. Also connected by rail either to Thrissur or Guruvayur from where taxi or bus can reach you to Palayoor..It is considered a Holy Place to visit. Some of the roads are congested. We traveled by car and had to ask for directions at several places. We were lucky to have visited all the seven and a half churches founded by St Thomas . Other churches are at kodungallur, Paravoor, kokamangalam,Nilackal, Niranam, Kollam and Thiruvithamcode .

This place is just 5 mins away from the famous Sree Krishna temple at Guruvayoor. Some pilgrimages are arranged to this location, for eg we saw one group that had arrived in a big bus full of pilgrims.
It is said that St Thomas the Apostle established Christianity here in Kerala. According to legend, he saw some Hindu Brahmins offering prayers. The natives would not accept his teachings unless they were shown a miracle. St Thomas then froze the water drops in mid air that were flung from a pond. The natives believed and were converted to Christianity.
There are some very beautiful statues and paintings around. Some people here have criticized the "Mother Mary in a saree" depiction. But actually that makes sense. Every region adapts it's religious icons into the prevailing cultural background. The saree and elephants are hallmarks of Kerala culture, and the artists have simply depicted the Mother of God in this way.
Elsewhere, there is very little to see. A huge statue of St Thomas towers in a small pool. A school nearby echoes with kids, who seem very interested in cameras! The Hindu-Christian architecture is beautifully echoed everywhere. For example, there is a large hall with carved wooden lattice work in front of the church. Inside, there are wooden elephant heads that are affixed on the walls. It's good to see this harmonious balance of architecture everywhere!

This is also a christian pilgrimage centre and the Annual celebrations are famous. It is also said that there was a temple here which was reconstructd into Church and the pond of temple is still maintained around. For those of us who are interested in the Syrian Christian Background this is a very important landmark. The first person who explained about the baptism pond was good. But then they took us to the museum and the place where, St. Thomas landed. Was not very impressed. The upkeep of the place could be improved. This is a place for those interested in the Syrian Christian History otherwise not worth it.

Considering the importance of this site, this is purportedly a church built in 52 AD by Thomas the Apostle, I would expect it to be in much different condition and a major pilgrimage destination. The story of Thomas arriving in Palayur (Palayoor) and building is said to be documented in non-christian writings from the time. That would place this church hundreds of year before any western church. Again the fact that contemporary non-christian writings document Thomas's existence and presence make this unique. I would expect Christians world wide to support this site.
The church is difficult to find and a difficult drive from Kozhikode. The original 1st century church was torn down by the Jesuits to build a "European style" church in the 1600's This was a crime. The church is nothing remarkable. There is a park where Thomas performed a miracle to convert the local brahmins. It is kind of tacky and run down. There is one sign explaining what happened in English. The tour guide made a valiant effort to answer my questions but his English or knowledge of history wasn't adequate, and my Malayalam is lacking. The statues of Mary with the elephants or Thomas baptizing the Indians are very funny to an American and don't do justice to the site.
The museum contains the floors from the original church. Many other items were there but poorly marked. The guide again often had trouble answering questions and wasn't certain about the age of many artifacts or where artifacts went. Considering this church is 2 millennium old there should be amazing displays.
There is also a pond which originally was an inlet leading to the ocean about 2 km away. There is a 3 story statue of Thomas and a replica of him arriving in a definitely non first century boat in the pond. the pond was covered in scum and the area between the pond and the museum just weeds.
There was a small souvenir stand with small cheaply made medals and texts in Malayalam
Someone needs to help bring this place up to condition its historical importance merits.
