Located away from the other two Stupas, Stupa #2 involves a long walk before you see it. Lovely, with a nice pond in front.

Sanchi Stupa No. 2 , situated in the Buddhist complex of Sanchi . It is around 10 min walking distance from Sanchi Stupa No. 1

Ticket - Compound Single Ticket for all Stupa monuments in complex

Must Have - Water Bottle , proper walking shoes , Hat/ Umbrella

Guide - If you will hire guide then you will get more and more information regarding Lord Buddha, King Ashoka. Guide will hire for full Buddhist complex with all Stupa's.

There is only walking way of raw stones an uneven path , which is not recommended for old age visitors, disabled visitors.
No way to go with wheelchair

A 10-15 min walk from main gate to Sanchi Stupa No. 2 in the middle of jungle .

A plane with very few carving of floral dezine on stones of railing and few sculptures .

As a visitor must visit this area for calm and cool jungle area with one side water reservoir.

On this Stupa , there is not so much carving or dezine also no welcome or front gate like Stupa no.1

Stupa no.2 is one of the oldest existing Buddhist stupas in India, and part of the Buddhist complex of Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh. It is of particular interest since it has the earliest known important displays of decorative reliefs in India. It displays what has been called "the oldest extensive stupa decoration in existence". Stupa 2 at Sanchi is therefore considered as the birthplace of Jataka illustrations.

Stupa No. 2 is located in a lower position than Stupa No. 1 because the relics it contained, are those of church dignitaries from the time of Ashoka, who were considered as worthy of a lower position than the Buddha himself in Stupa number 1, or his disciples in Stupa No. 3.

Imperdibile. Sosta di almeno un paio di ore.

2300 years back in time, to the reign of King Ashoka. If you remember your history, he converted to Buddhism after the Kalinga war when he saw the misery and havoc that war created. He took to peace and for the rest of his life spread Buddhism in India and overseas, chiefly in what is now Sri Lanka.

His wife Devi, was from Vidisha, a great seat of learning and an important town in those times. So near Vidisha, set on a hill in the village of Sanchi, he created a monastery. The monastery existed for a 1000 years before it fell into disuse and ruin. Again the time scales take your breath away - he created something that was functional for a 1000 years and still exists. Wow!

This is one of the older buildings near the original residences of monks within the complex. A guide is necessary to point out the stories in the carvings.

To visit Stupa-2, you have to walk a lot in the rocky terrain. So, it is not advisable for old and feeble persons.

Must watch the Jataka stories curved in the railing. There is no chhatra and no torana.

We visited Sanchi last week. It is about 1.5 hours from Bhopal but no public transportation options from Bhopal. We took a private bus to reach there. OLA maybe much more costlier. Better to engage a guide for a more fruitful visit

The place is beautiful and scenic and located on a hilltop. The area and gardens are very well maintained and it is a great attraction for the whole family. For my 2-yr old, there was a small enclosure with lots of rabbits, geese and ducks playing around. It was a lovely break for my daughter who loved feeding them leaves. Avoid eatables in hand as there are a lot of monkeys around. You can spend a couple of hours see the stupas, architecture and history

The views of the surrounding forests and farms from the hill are amazing. There are columns which draw inspiration from Greek influence. There is a school / stay area down the hill at the backside of the main stupa. Do visit the same as well for the nice walk through the thick greenery. There is a Srilankan Buddhist temple at the main entrance and do visit the same either at the start or end of your trip.

The stupas are located in a vast area and you would need to do a lot of walking. There are benches to sit beneath the trees and hence you can explore the place at your own pace. There is a small shop with snacks and cold drinks available at the site. However, there are not much options for lunch or meals

A must visit place to spend a day in peace, solitude, introspection and wondering at the era gone by
