My wife and I travelled into the Himalayas with Misty Dhillon's Himalayan outback. An atmospheric trip fishing for Mahseer in rivers bordering Nepal ,floating down remote gorges, leopards passing through camp, stunning vistas and delicious indian cuisine .Then off to the Corbett National park with Ritish Suhri to track tigers elephant and other game.Beautifull birds, dense sal forests and emerald rivers. The trip ending at the Ramganga river lodge .An adventure of a lifetime!!!!!

For those wanting a longer time in India, the Indian Govt has a scheme called "Idex" that you may want to look at. There are various locations and lengths of stay....you will pay your fare to India and then be catered for in a camp. You have options as to how to volunteer during your stay such as teaching English (no quals required) or working with diferently abled young people. I chose the Himchal Pradesh region as it was cooler, and stayed in a camp in Palampur ....well away from all th hype of Delhi and other cities.
After orientation in Delhi for 3 days (staying with host families) travel by overnight train and then jeep to Palampur. Delhi is a total assault on the senses and travelling budget class is not for the faint hearted, but our little Idex escort took good care of us all.
In return Idex takes you all over the place on your time out....Agra, Rajisthan and the Golden Temple etc. Taxis are inexpensive....four of us went to Shimla sharing costs, and Daramasala and McLeod Gange (home of Dahli Lama) were just an hour away.
you will meet many volunteers who all come at different times and are of many cultures.
The Himchal Pradesh region is lush and tea growing. In this volunteering capacity you will go to the homes of people you will work with and so get a real insight into life in India...on the whole they are a very happy people and the few weeks contributed is a humbling experience.

I visited the Himalayas quit a few years back. It was my trip to Kashmir from the India side. It is a trip till this very day I have not forgotten. I can't describe in words how lovely these mountains are!!! It truly touches your soul. It was with my family and we did climb and explored parts of the mountain trenches. We also experienced Mt. Everest briefly which is the highest point. It can get very cold. You want to bring warm clothing I lost my red sweater on this adventure. For every mountain lover you definitely don't want to miss out on the Himalayan adventure!!

If you can't hike in the Himalayas then the next best thing is to at least view them up close. If you are flying from Paro, Bhutan to Kathmandu, Nepal, sit on the right side of the plane. If you are flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa, Tibet sit on the left side of the plane (sit on the opposite side if you are going in the opposite directions). You can take a smaller plane ride (5-6 passenger) to get a close view, but you'll still only be as close as the regular plane routes take you and the price for the smaller ride runs $150 to $250 depending on company and the amount of time for your flight. Early morning flights/fly bys are the best time of day.

Были в предгорье Гималаев, видели шикарные манящие снежные вершины. Жили несколько дней в Дхарамсале - резиденции Далай Ламы. Самое сильное впечатление - это наблюдение жизни самих тибетцев. Редкое умиротворение.

When I was walking in the highest Himalayan Mountains I felt as if my soul had been generated on those high places, covered with melting snow on the highest peaks ... and when I descended by Hills I felt so strong and deep like them and my heart was filled with mysterious energy...and during the journey travelling at night I could see the full moon illuminating the road with circular curves that seems never end but was so good and I looked to the sky feeling to expand myself... I was boundless, limitless, when I was looking at the stars, silence permeates me and made me sleep, suddenly the sun was raising and I hear a bird singing from someplace, was time to say good morning Holy Spirit, the music was an echo of my own inner voice, and we stopped for a chai and I saw a dog coming close to me and looking inside my eyes...I see no difference between him and me... Slowly, my separate existence was erased and only God remains...so where I will look to God now ? How should I look for it ? Only He is, I'm not..
