This small monastery has a few different names. It is accessible by either 20min cable car from outside Tawang monastery or by foot from the city of Tawang. I walked up all the way from Oygen Ling monastery and was really glad I did. This is a deeply spiritual place where the nuns are continually reciting their prayers and teachings. Perched near the very top of the mountain overlooking the deep valley, when the clouds clear. I was given tea almost as soon as I arrived, despite the nun being busy keeping the praying nuns watered with butter milk tea. There are many dogs up here that sleep for the most part and don't bother anyone. When I was here 6 local guys were stitching new duvets on the courtyard ready for the winter times.

Its accessible via Tawang Ropeway. After 20 minutes of one way journey to the hill top, you need another 5 minutes to get there. Took some photographs. Surprised by the invitation for butter tea. What a warm welcome! Took the 'Butter Tea' with biscuits/Toast. Thanked the old lady monk and returned to the Ropeway stop. The ropeway took us to the other side.

This beautiful Ani Gompa, made amidst hills is an extremely nice place. I had seen a TV documentary about it way back in 1992 and despite about half a dozen visits to Tawang, it was this week, I could visit this Gompa for the first time. Part or should I say, main reason is its approach. There are two ways you can reach here. Either go on a higher hill, which is motorable, up to a point and then come down through a trek which has now mostly been converted into steps. Second, there is a lower hill road which will take you to a place from where you have to climb up. My guide in Tawang made it the best deal. While going we went to the higher hill road and he directed the vehicle to come down and wait where the climb starts. This way, it was climbing down for us while going and coming back from the Gompa.
Once you reach there, this is a beautiful palce. Presently there are about 50 nuns, from very young ones, even small girls to senior in age. This nunnery is the oldest in Tawang, almost of same period when the main Tawang monastery came. I admire the courage of the nuns and the extreme safety provided by the community that this place has continued for more than 300 years. Even today, reaching there is difficult but idea must have been to seclude this place, away from common populace so that it was safer and gave better atmosphere for devoted lives to nuns, without day to day hassles of living amongst prying individuals.
Present day Ani Gompa is modern in its building and its residential area. We had the privilege of talking to the head nun, learning from her, sharing tea with nuns and talking to them. On my request, I could take their photographs as well.
Overall it was an excellent experience. Of course, despite it being climbing down, legs ached for a couple of days, because of the particular strain it takes to climb down the hills.
