I am so sorry you did not enjoy your stay but in my opinion, this review is very unfair and simply heartbreaking, as I went out of my way to please and accommodate you, as I do all of my guests. I barely know where to start to rebut this caustic diatribe. But in my defense I will try. 1. I warned you when you booked that the family room was a bit small and that most couples prefer to book the larger Queen room, yet you insisted on staying in the family room. Given that, I offered you the option to decide later if you might want to move to the larger room, upon your arrival. Of course, the larger room does cost a bit more. 2. Because the guests who had just checked out the day before had mentioned that the fridge was acting up, I warned you at check-in, that it might be dodgy. But also noted that at the moment it was working fine and the ice was frozen solid. I also told you we were planning to go get a new fridge as soon as possible. (Which we have already done by the way.) 3. We had just done a total make over of the house and many items including the paint and bedding, are all shiny and new. And while some of the kitchen items are older, we made sure that they are still quite serviceable and functional. We do not have a microwave oven, so I have no clue what you are talking about on that score but I did see your note about the base of the blender needing attention and have since remedied that as well. 4. The house had been closed to all bookings during the entire month of October and since this is a home in the jungle there will always be something trying to make its new home in the house. Although I was a bit embarrassed in the moment, I did appreciate your calling my attention to the cobwebs that had gathered in the wooden parts of the underside of the bed and that we had overlooked in our zeal to reopen the house to bookings. I was indeed shocked that you wanted a partial refund of a standard cleaning fee because there were a few cobwebs, because the cleaning fee is actually a pay it forward kind of thing. But none the less, I did refund you $20 for the inconveniences of the cobwebs and the wonky freezer. 5. You have also stated that I am trying to nickle and dime my guests, and yet; I did not charge your damage deposit for a brand new expensive white wash cloth (now ruined) that was being used for doing the dishes, when there was a brand new sponge on the counter, nor did I charge you for the 8 woven cloth napkins you threw on the floor and obviously walked on with your shoes to clean up a water spill from the failing freezer. You could have used a plentiful dish towel or even walked ten steps to the bath for a larger terry towel. 6. Glassware is not something we invest in because it is fragile and tiles floors are unforgiving. So other than keeping a couple of wine and beer glasses on hand, we do prefer plastic. I noticed that you bought several types of specialty glassware to use for your drinks, so I presume that you had what you needed. 7. You have mentioned that you don't believe that we NEVER rent the rooms to separate parties, because there were room numbers and signs. I resent your lack of trust and effort to damage my business reputation. There was a time many years ago when we did offer the rooms in a shared space. The room numbers and sign in the bathroom about cleaning up after yourselves as a courtesy, still seemed appropriate for use, so I simply left them. It is not an indicator of any efforts to be deceitful or of dishonesty. 8. Most of our guests come here for the activities and the adventures offered in our little rural community and they spend very little time focused on the house. Guests with young families always appreciate having books and toys to keep little hands occupied and "pets" to play with outside. These were in no way an impediment during your stay. 9. You never stayed in the family room and with just two people, I am not sure how you can judge how comfortable sleeping in the room may be or how the house functions for a family. 10. While this home is clean and usually very comfortable for our guests, but it is certainly not meant to provide a live-in apartment experience. The closets are certainly adequate with several shelves and baskets for belongings, the large 4 drawer chests in each room are unusual in Costa Rica. The hot tub, is in an upper terrace that has a spectacular view of Lake Arenal. We are rarely in the part of the house that overlooks the spa, so our guests almost always have their privacy. I will note that even as you complain, you did not even try to make actual use of any of these or any of our other amenities. Your belongings were strewn all over the house and you kept the house locked up so tight even when you were at home, that one would of course feel stifled. 11. The photos of the home are very accurate and it is our standard practice to close off which ever bedroom is not being rented, to avoid an unpaid usage. I later discovered that you had removed two extra bed pillows from that bedroom before it was locked, even though there were 4 pillows on the bed in your room.. If you wanted to use both bedrooms.. you should have rented the option for a two bedroom house. In addition to the larger Queen room, you still had the entire house to spread out in and there are several places that suitcases can be tucked out of the way. 12. As for the cleaning fee, it was not added to your bill, it is called out in the listing. This is not a fancy hotel with a lot of rooms to offset costs, it is a private cottage home. Laundry supplies and electricity are expensive and the cleaning fee not only pays for cleaning but also helps to offset a myriad of extra costs, such the gardening ann when guests go out and leave all of the lights and fans running all day. 13. In Costa Rica, services can simply be unreliable, we do our best to provide for any contingencies in disruption of services. In Closing: We often have groups of 4-6 who are quite comfortable in the home but occasionally we get a guest that is determined to be dissatisfied, no matter what we do. Fortunately this is very rare. Sadly, we knew that your experience would be decidedly negative from the moment you booked it. We do take great pride in our little business and we truly love hosting and interacting with our almost daily parade of happy guests.

Thanks for your kind review. We are indeed located outside of La Fortuna, the closest large town, but we are very close to the adventure activities in the area. As for the road.. it is rustic and we do our best to make regular improvements to it, but with massive rainfalls, erosion and herds of cattle going up and down it all the time, it is still a bit bumpy. We do always suggest a 4x4 for the ground clearance in arriving here and for driving in many other parts of Costa Rica as well. In October, we are doing a big makeover of the house and perhaps a little more work on the road as well. We have added a bunk bed in the room with the twin bed, so now the house can comfortably sleep up to 6 people.

I am sorry your were disappointed, but to accuse me of outright lies is unfair! This home has accommodated 7 adults and an infant on many occasions, using a crib and a Queen airbed in the Sun room. The 3 bedroom designation came from TA, who counts any bed in another room as a bedroom. However, I do understand that having one bathroom for a large group can be a challenge for some, We have since added a bunk bed in one of the bedrooms and we no longer use the airbed. The house now accommodates 6 people and one infant. We have at least 7 restaurants and 2 markets all located within 2 km of the house and one restaurant is located right at the bottom of our hill, so I don't understand this comment. Perhaps if you had not arrived at Midnight and left at 7am, you could have explored the area better. Encantada Guest House, is located at the top of a hill, which is why we have such beautiful views. We ALWAYS suggest a 4x4 SUV for road clearance and that guests arrive before 6pm, as stated in our listings and the info packet which is sent to all guests immediately upon booking. The roads in Costa Rica can be very rustic. Our road is indeed more rustic than most, but totally passable in a passenger car if they drive slowly. Most of your group chose not to rent a car at all and they arrived via Uber and Taxi. The group came in at 3 different times including your arrival after Midnight and in a small sedan. We never suggest our Guests walk up or down, unless they choose to do so and we have even provided a shuttle service when against our advice, they have not rented an appropriate vehicle.
