We were a group of 7 couples, who stayed here 3 nights: so 21 nights of rooms, yet it felt like we were an inconvenience. I had seen many others complaining in reviews here that they were given breakfast reservations that did not meet their needs, so I asked our agent >1 wk ahead to make a 7:30 reservation each morning because we had full days of tours planned. I was told by our agent this would not be an issue for us.
Upon arrival, we were told by hotel staff we would be having breakfast the next morning at 9:30 AM!! (We'd plan to leave for a tour at 8:30). I levitated. After much back and forth with our travel agent the hotel said they could feed us at 8:15, which compromised our itinerary. Day 2 was not until 8:30. On Day 3 because we were leaving at 8:30, they said we could eat at 8 AM. However, they did not seat us all together, and my husband and I had to eat on our own. I have never seen this nonsense elsewhere. We travel a lot! It was merely a breakfast buffet with lukewarm food and no opportunity to order so there was no need for reservations at all! That was the 1st unnecessary annoyance. The hotel constantly made it clear to us that we were a low priority because they had a group of 40 to cater to.
We arrived late at night (around 8 pm), and it took over an hour to get our luggage delivered to our rooms. Then we wanted to get together in the bar downstairs, and asked if they could move a few tables together. They said it was impossible, because "the tables are too heavy". From then on, we moved tables ourselves
We also asked about participating in the historical tour of the property which is advertised on the website. Whenever we asked, they asked us our room # and looked it up, before waffling and saying "ask again in the morning", or responding that it was not being offered. If this is the case, why did they need our room #? It seems some guests are more important than others. In total we asked 6 times, after they kept putting us off, even requesting if something could be arranged informally for us. This hotel does not try to be helpful, they simply keep putting you off hoping that you will eventually give up and go away. They were clearly not going to do anything for us, so they should have just said no in the first place rather than stringing us along for 3 days. Also, if you do not have a "daily historical tour", stop lying and advertising you do on your website.
On the second evening, there was a wedding in the hotel. The music was so ridiculously loud starting at about 4 PM you could not hear yourself think, and even the bar was not an option because they were in the room next door and constantly the doors were opened. Also, there was a bad echo reverberating in there because they don't have any sound absorption panels. We found a small common area with couches in the wing we were staying in instead, and hoped to get our group together there. Again staff rudely said we were not allowed to use that area because it "belonged to all guests" despite the fact our group had all the rooms in that wing. Unlike other places we stayed, the staff were completely uninterested in helping find a solution to help us congregate or get away from the noise they didn't seem to think was a problem. Furthermore, we were cut off from even walking through various parts of the hotel because the wedding was taking pictures there. Really? Why didn't they take over the hotel then? Again, we were constantly the inconvenience despite paying 21 nights of rooms.
I asked the front desk to book us a cab into town so we could get away from the ruckus and eat in peace. I asked 2 hrs ahead. However they only called in 5 min before we needed it. It arrived 40 min later and we were late for our reservation. The front desk was not sympathetic at all "it's not our fault" with not one iota of sympathy even. Anyone booking here should realize it is a long cab ride to get to anywhere else to eat.
Several of our group hoped to book massage appointments in the spa. We were told only 1 person could get a massage as they one had one staff member to do them. Again, really?! This is supposedly one of the top spas in Portugal? Further, the only appointments were between 10:15-1:15, when our group was doing a tour.
The website also claimed that children were not allowed in the pool area between 1-7. We thought this was great, until we went down to use the pool and hot tub around 4:30 only to discover the pool and hot tub were full of kids. Clearly no one enforces these rules, so why have them?
So we couldn't use the hot tub or the pool, or the spa. All in all, this hotel was a really bad experience.
