I, my husband, my bachelor brother, and my sister-in-law and her husband stayed at this B& b for 5 nights. Beautiful surrounds. we were but 1 city block form the entrance to the VAtican Museum, whihc get you to the sistine chaple. We found Roberto a wonderful host. Our breakfast espectations were simple, but we were served a good vaiety in the morning. There are many terraces at this home , it allowed us to be away from our family members for down time after a bsuy day touring. We will be back!
this B&B is run by owner-manager who lives on-site. the care we received was extremely gracious, much as we might expect from visiting with family. the rooms are pleasant and more than satisfactory. Breakfast in the family dining room is a special treatment, with fine china and silver (a sort of upgraded continental). The owners were extremely hospitable. Two downsides are the significant steps (60+) down to their site from the street and the pesky mosquitoes.
PROS: Micala is friendly, clean, close to Vatican, high security (3 locked doors to enter and exist each time..,could also be considered a con), provides ride to/from airport, comfortable bed (for a hide-a-bed that is), the maid didn't take any of our money or possessions, the lemon cake at breakfast was good (even on the third day), Roberto was at the airport on time, with a sign as promised, cheaper than most B&B's and hotels we checked out in Rome. CONS: No orientation what so ever but Roberto immediately asked us for our passports and the rest of the money upon our arrival with no explanation. The majority of the pictures on their website mainly show their living room which looks nice but they don't encourage you to sit down, its more of a sit down at the table, eat breakfast, and leave rather than relax in the main room. TV didn't work (although Roberto tried to help us make it work), advertised Wi-Fi didn't work because they didn't know their own password, bring your own blowdryer (the one they have is like walking outside on a calm day), poor breakfast (don't stay here if you're lactose intolerant b/c the 2 things they have are cereal and yogurt, same thing every morning), don't ask for directions or recommendations (Roberto will give you incorrect directions, we found this out several times including the Metro being about 3/4 mile away versus "200 meters"). STEEP steps w/ minimal lighting (bad after dark) and you'll need to carry your bags since wheeling isn't an option considering they are so narrow. They are unreachable after breakfast (their gate is closed, no phone number given for help, etc so if you need anything or have a question you are out of luck), Roberto is somewhat passive-aggressive (he'll ask a question and they cut you off with his opinion which happened a lot...see below for proof of this behavior), the maid didn't give us any toilet paper so we were out for an entire night which was a HUGE CON since we found out at 10pm with no way of getting more (I didn't pay $100/night to "camp"), he doesn't have a jaguar (he doesn't have the money to get it fixed) so you'll get picked up in whatever friend's vehicle he can borrow instead, the security alarm goes on and off for about an hour in the evenings so don't expect to sleep before 10:30pm, and it will go off again around 6am. We asked to have the volume turned down or have the noise happen earlier but that wasn't an option. They only have heat in the evenings and early mornings so it can get chilly if you go off-season like we did. We found out during breakfast (9:30am) on our last day that 10am was the check-out and we needed to be gone but it wasn't on their website and we weren't told beforehand. We were told before going to pick up our rental car to leave our bags and belongings outside rather than in the room. This would have been fine but they mentioned a couple different times how they have had intruders in the past hence, the annoying security alarm and all the locked doors. We did as they said but felt very uncomfortable with it considering we had a labtop, garmin, phones, etc sitting outside for the hour we were gone. Finally, they had an electrician come on the last day we were there 1 hr before our departure so we had to move of our bags, etc. If we wouldn't have been there the electrician would have come in to our room anyway. When we asked if she could schedule it an hour later after we left she said no. During the electrician visit (before we had showered for the day) she told us we needed to be out within 15 minutes so the maid would have several hours to clean our room before the next guest arrived (yet we were the only ones staying there for the 3 days and couldn't shower with the 2 electricians in our room). In general, a lot of assumptions were made on their part with things they should have told us but didn't. If I could do it all over again I would stay somewhere else as this B&B wasn't nearly as hospitable as other B&B's throughout that we've stayed at both in America and Europe. One interesting comment: After Roberto was standoffish and somewhat rude for 3 days without going out of the way at all for our needs/comfort he asked if we would not only encourage our friends to stay with them but actually recommended that we post to Trip Advisor "as long as it's only good comments". His comment really caught me offguard since he didn't seem to care much about our happiness for the 3 days we were there and probably would have argued with us if we would have mentioned the toilet paper outage.…
