Me and my mom spent there a couple of nights - but didn´t really want to leave! we had the entire upper floor for us, the building is amazing. alessandra´s hospitality was great, we had good and interesting talks (we got a lot of information about society and life in mali). the food is delicious, the ambient, very calm. we had no car, but the staff brought us to town with the motorbike, once we got there by donkey and carriage (which was even better...) who likes to be in a calm place outside town - go for it!

We stayed at the sandcastle during our trip to Mali. Allessandra's hospitality has been amazing. Excellent food at dinner served on the riverside (beware of moosquitos!), rooms beautifully styled and full of atmosphere. Stunning terrace where to look at the stars from. No doubt, the best place we have been while travelling to Mali. Go there, if you have the chance!

We really enjoyed our stay here. We stayed in the top floor suite which is huge and beautifully decorated with African items. The large balcony off the bedroom with comfortable chairs sucked us into long stargazing sessions both nights while sipping lemongrass tea from the property's garden. The bed is especially beautiful and comfortable, much of it lovingly crafted by Shadal herself. We had half-board and the food was top-notch. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the large bathroom has a window from the shower/tub overlooking the river. The grounds -- though recovering from an especially heavy rainy season -- are beautiful and well maintained. There are even two pet monkeys and a family of cats to play with. The place is located a couple of kilometers from the town center, right next to the ferry. We really enjoyed the peaceful setting and being away from the (few) city lights enhanced our stargazing. Shadal met us as we arrived and by the end of our two day stay I felt as if we were friends. She is a wonderful host. I believe the electricity is solar, so lighting is limited at night, and, there is no hot water. Shadal was just finishing two smaller ground floor suites which looked like they would be quite pleasant when complete. Our travel companion slept on the roof on what looked like a comfortable mosquito-net-protected twin bed with frame and mattress that the staff prepared for him. He enjoyed this as well. Finally, we had an excellent English-speaking guide to tour Djenné. Do not tour Djenné without a guide -- you'll miss out on a lot of meaning. His small fee was well worth it. His name is "Sory" and his number is 77 51 55 82. Or, Shadal can put you in touch with him.

somehting you ll often hear in mali ,where people is so friendly . I stay at the sandcastle 2 nights ,and its great .The suite is full of crafts ,masque. Very well decorated .clean .i enjoy the drinks on the roof by sunset .great view . the owners are a very nice touareg family . For people without a car a bit far from town , but not much to do in town by night anyway ..But in the day , waow ,we went direct from our hotel stairs to the bridge near the mosque. The all town made of mud and sand ! magic .There is a mystical athmosphere about Djenne .And one , tailor , had his work exposed at the simsonian folks museum in Chicago ,hes near restaurant Baba ,and do embroidery .

Dear fellow travellers, I was recently in Mali and stayed in Djenné. I wanted to book a suite in Hotel Le Campement for app. EUR. 100,00. But I was highly dispappointed checking it. It was quite spartan and had an "interesting" view at the local jail. It was by far not as comfortable as the price would indicate. Going through your invaluable guide I decided to go and stay at the Sandcastle Hotel/Guestrooms, next to the ferry. Your guide says it is at the top end, price wise. But for only half the price (!) I got a 110 m2 loft, a beautiful two rooms suite, very tastefully equipped, with splendid Mali art and furniture, with a large balcony with a view on the Bani river and a bathroom with shower and bath, with when sitting in the bath, a splendid view on the river through a large window. The Sandcastle is a stunningly beautiful building, right on the river banks, made from mud and sand. It has guestrooms, the possibility to sleep om the roof or to camp on the premises. It has a small open air cinema and large gardens to sit and relax. The lady of the house is pretty and friendly and speaks many languages, including some Dutch. Drinks and simple but tasty food is served upon request. Very good value for money and really worth a visit. I stayed several days there and had a great time. Best regards, M. (Rex) Mulder
