we went there last summer, eager to have some rest, visit rome, and enjoy the swimming pool. We arrived and discovered the big flat on the 1st floor. (owners living downstairs). It was really big, neat and the welcome was all right. the place is really nice. But very soon we realised it was impossible to get a good night's sleep. Dogs kept barking all night all. As the situation did not improve we talked to the owner, who said he would fix it. the following night was ok, but the rest was hell... then the daughter of the owner began to be extremely rude in her attitude, not listening to what we had to say, and going away leaving us no time to finish our sentences ! 2 days before the end of our stay, we reached an agreement : we were to take the other flat as it was free, but we were asked not to use the spare room because the flat we had booked had only one room and was less expensive ! we thought the cleaner would have cleaned it after the family who was leaving had gone, but my husband, my 1 year old and I were left in a dirty flat (I have to say that the room we were not allowed to enter had been cleaned ...! ), We had to clean it ourselves !!!! And in the end we haven't seen half the things we wanted to see in Rome because we were too nacked to go there in the early morning... On the very last day, noone came to say goodbye or anything of that kind... I put 3 photos of the flat we were kindly allowed to go in ... We love Italy, the Italian people were really lovely and the food is wonderful, but one that occasion, our holiday was ruined... One more thing : if you plan to visit the Vatican, visitors with children or babies in pushchairs do not have to queue... you just have to ask at the entrance. you'll save hours ... L-Marie - france
My wife, our 20 month old boy and I took some time out and stayed at Casa Castellace for just over 6 weeks. It was perfect. We had both apartments for three weeks and then kept on the Stalle apt for another three. We’d been to the area before. If you looking for unpretentious peace and quiet with Italian charm and no tourists, the Sabina region is the place. You need a car, for sure, but the twisting roads and hard-to-find locations are one of the reasons why there are no tourists. Even the guides seem a little down on the region. Persevere – it’s worth it. Claudio, the owner of Casa Castellace, is a self-described ‘reluctant in-keeper’. He’s not an effusive, tourist-friendly hotel manager, he’s a Roman who has a country house, and he rents two apartments, plain and simple. Don’t get me wrong, he was a fabulous host. It’s just that Castellace suits people who want to be left alone. The property itself is fabulous. It’s completely quiet despite being so close to the A1, the swimming pool is beautifully located and the apartments are simple but stylish. We would recommend the Stalle over Le Stelle, because it is bigger and cooler in the summer. You’ll need fans in June – Aug but Claudio helped us out on this front. Claudio became a good friend over the six weeks we were there. We did initially have some misgivings because you stay on the property where the owner has a house, and we felt there was a risk we’d feel like unwanted guests. But this was never the case, probably because we’re relaxed and low maintenance people. When we had problems he did everything he could to fix them. It’s rural Italy so we had a power cut on one occasion, but Claudio was out with his torch in a shot, making sure we were OK and looking to fix the problem. So if you are looking to be left alone, if you’re looking for real Italy not just the tourist hot spots in Umbria and Tuscany, if you’re not looking to be pampered by hotel staff, we’d highly recommend it. It’s really close to Rome yet so peaceful it’s easy to forget Rome is 30 miles away. We’d recommend taking the train into Rome in the summer. Drive to Stimigliano station and park, then take the train in. It’s just easier. For food, try La Vecchia Quercia in Selci, about 20 mins drive away. One final word. Do ask about the dogs next door. They were a persistent problem for people sleeping in Le Stelle. Claudio had a complaint in with the Carabinieri and I am pretty sure this won’t be a problem any more, but it’s worth checking.
