Quiet, comfortable and restorative.
This comfortable house provided us with an excellent base from which to explore Islay. The weather was very good. We had a bit of rain but we all needed it and this gave us a reason to light the fire, which was lovely. The garden was invaded by two sheep but this was temporary!. We also encountered a vertical snail migration, of all resident snails, up the outside walls of the house! Intriguing. Great place for a stay. Very attentive and responsive support team as well.

Wonderful
We had a lovely week in Coillabus. 360 degree views, utter peace and quiet, well-equipped, homely house. Loads to do in Islay - or simply enjoy a day at “home”.

Peaceful stay at Coillabus Cottage
We had a wonderful family stay at Coillabus Cottage where we enjoyed all weathers, large dinners and peaceful down-time. The views from the cottage in all directions were gorgeous; on clear days, we could see across Glenastle to the Rinns of Islay lighthouse, and in the opposite direction there were stunning views of Mull of Kintyre. Immediately around the cottage were some lovely, easy hikes which led us along the farm tracks to Ineraval, on quiet roads to the American monument and through the RSPB reserve and Glenastle. We went on a slightly longer walk to Killeyan and had a picnic – a beautiful, private beach with wild goats and seals! On days then the weather was a bit wilder, we were very happy to relax in the cosy livingroom around the fire with one of the many books or games. We sometimes walked (45mins) or drove to the nearby village of Port Ellen for local shops and restaurants - a small Co-Op, Cambells (delicious cheeses and self-service dry-foods), SeaSalt Bistro, The Islay Hotel bar – and the perfect flat white from The Wee Box (a little van parked up on Charlotte Street). We also visit the Machrie hotel for pitch and putt golf and for lunch, Bowmore for the Islay shop, Peatzeria and Taj Mahal curry house, and several of the distilleries. Standout day trips were the beaches – the Singing Sands, Killeyan and Machir Bay. The cottage’s kitchen was well-equipped to prepare family meals (including some tasty scallops bought Jean’s Fresh Fish van in Bowmore). Surrounding the house was a little patio and garden furniture to enjoy a cocktail at golden hour!
We felt that the cottage was ours and that we were completely undisturbed during our stay – thank you Hester and the team for a wonderful two weeks!

Remote Bliss
Just returned from a week staying at this extremely well equipped and comfortable cottage. For us, the remoteness was a bonus, for some, it may not be. Breakfast sitting outside the cottage in the sun overlooking the most amazing of views, was an exceptionally brilliant way to start the day. Being surrounded by sheep and lambs meant that hours of amusement could be had watching their antics. An abundance of wildlife could be seen from the cottage location and as a small group of photographers, this was an added bonus. The cottage was well equipped and the beds extremely comfy. Perhaps the furnishings in the lounge could be updated but this was clearly a home with a lot of family memories. It felt like a privilege to be there. A happy week spent in a lovely location. Would have no hesitation looking forward a return visit in the near future. No television which for us, was not an issue, for some it might be. Internet connection was fairly good so that would satisfy the need to be kept up to date with social media etc. Thank you for providing a secure garden for the dogs, they certainly enjoyed their Islay break. Thank you, we’ll be back.

Gastfreundschaft während des Whiskyfestivals
Einfach nur ein tolles und gemütliches Cottage in der Nähe von Port Ellen. Wir haben das Cottage weit im Voraus gebucht und haben es nicht bereut. Wir waren zu 6 Erwachsenen und einem Kleinkind während des Whiskyfestivals. Der Kontakt war immer sehr sehr freundlich und fast umgehend. Alle Fragen wurden zeitnah beantwortet. Das Cottage selbst ist eine Wucht. Eine schöne Küche mit Herd, Kühlschrank, Eisschrank, Waschmaschine und anderen Küchengeräten. Die Schlafzimmer sind gemütlich und die beiden Bäder superschön. Ein großes Wohnzimmer und ein schöner Außenbereich mit Blick auf Schafwiesen runden das Ganze ab. Das Internet funktioniert auch mit mehreren Personen einwandfrei. Wir haben keinen Fernseher vermisst, da wir immer genug zu tun hatten. Das Internet würde aber reichen, um damit Fernsehen zu schauen. Vom Cottage aus ist es nicht weit bis nach Port Ellen, wo man einkaufen kann. Bis zu einem schönen Strand sind es gerade mal 5 bzw. 10 Minuten Autofahrt. Auch zum Wandern liegt das Cottage sehr schön. Wir kommen gerne wieder und empfehlen jedem dieses wundervolle Cottage!

Lovely
We had a great visit to Islay; we enjoyed the countryside and beaches, and the whiskey tasting. The highlight for us was returning each evening to this cottage. It was warm and really comfortable. Lots of hot water, well equipped, clean and warm. We loved lighting a fire and reflecting on the day. You need a car as it is some way from Port Ellen and in the middle of farm land. A real adventure.

Superbe endroit
Une véritable maison, très agréable, bien équipée, au calme, au milieu d'une campagne écossaise typique.
La vue sur la mer et les collines est très belle. Nous avons passé un moment chaleureux dans cette jolie maison.

Homely very comfortable, well equipped accommodation, spectacular views, peaceful location
Great comfortable cottage, with spectacular views extremely well equipped. A car would be recommended as it is a more remote location but that adds to the peace and tranquility. Amazing views over to Mull of Kintyre, with awesome sunrises.
Very easy to get anywhere on the island and very comfortable homely accommodation to come home to.
Highly recommend this property.

Awful experience
Our experience with this rental was the worst I have had in 25 years of self-catering properties in Scotland and England. So bad that we upped and left after one night. The proprietor was in absentia, off in Italy and failed to inform us that 10 days prior one of the two Cal-Mac ferries had crashed into the pier, and was non-operational, leaving even those with reservations unable to get their vehicle across to the island for days. When we finally got to the house (car-less) we were not met by anyone, and found ourselves 4 miles out of town in a remote farmhouse. The house was in a disheveled state, with a strong mildew smell (that smell West of Scotland houses get when they are empty and unheated 6 months of the year) and given the dimensions of the dust-bunnies in the main room, had not been given a spring-cleaning in a long time.
This is not a location you can possibly enjoy Islay from without transport, and we had no desire to be stuck for four days in a frankly depressing, ramshackle location full of cast-off furniture and decoration.
When we asked for a refund we were offered nothing other than a laughable, tone-deaf offer of "extra nights" (an offer easy to make given nobody else was booked the remainder .of the high season August month).
So we bailed out the next day, and I recommend others do the same rather than rent this property, whose owner we consider to be negligent of her duty as a host.
For comparison, our prior three nights had been spent in beautifully furnished and maintained farmhouse on the Kintyre peninsula (at similar price), whose owner communicated consistently with us via email and welcomed us graciously at her home. I have been in enough rentals to know we should have expected similar service here and we did not.

The ferry situation this August has been frustrating for islanders and visitors alike. However, as we state on our website- and as Calmac state on theirs- it is advisable to book your car on the ferry. While I understand his frustration I do feel that this guest’s determination not to break his lifetime habit of never booking a ferry was unfortunate.
Had he booked as advised the wonderful staff at Calmac would have done their best to keep him informed of the status of his booking (albeit that the guests didn’t have access to a mobile and were out of email contact for several days). Updates were also posted on the Calmac site and app. As an accommodation provider we do have to leave guests to communicate themselves directly with Calmac or Flybe over delays and disruption as this is the best way to ensure accurate information is received. It is rarely helpful to second guess or interfere with often complex logistics. We do however ask guests to let us know when they plan to arrive.
Most of our guests do bring cars and we recommend this. Car hire for a couple of days would have been readily available – a not ideal but simple solution which I suggested but was dismissed with vigour when I phoned the guest from my own holiday. The cottage enjoys a rural location but there’s plenty to do for a family at or within walking distance of the cottage. We have a fishing rod and permit and our guests have the use of a boat on a nearby loch; we have a Jacques croquet set, lots of jigsaws, games and a rainy day drawer with craft materials, well stocked bookcases and a star gazing kit. There is excellent low level walking and an RSPB reserve, bicycles can be hired in the village for family fun and we would have been happy to help with this.
I feel it is beneath my dignity to grace the reviewer’s comments on the state and style of my cottage with a detailed response. The style of the cottage can be seen by all prospective guests on our website. I can assure future guests that the cottage is thoroughly cleaned between lets and has a three-star quality rating from VisitScotland. This review was published just hours after I informed the guest that I had been unable to relet- and therefore refund -his booked nights.

Comfortable accommodation, breathtaking views and access to fantastic scenery.
We have been to Islay several times and each part of the island has given us a different experience. Had a fantastic experience at Coillabus. The scenery was breathtaking and we had easy access to fabulous countryside to explore. The accomodation was very comfortable and had eveything we needed.
We will definitely return.
