Surrounded by the arms of the river Ill, downtown includes the main sites and monuments that are hallmarks of Strasbourg, such as the Cathedral, the Maison Kammerzell, Petite France or the covered bridges... Neudorf is a recent area whose development dates from the mid of the 19th century, when flood risks are excluded. Urbanization is there then developed at a rapid pace, interrupted only by the wars. Highlights of his organization put in place until the early 20th century with the construction of the harbour basins and various tracks from Strasbourg to Kehl. Originally, farms and hostels scattered in the flood zone from the 1840s, regularization and containment of the Rhine, and the digging of the discharge canal of the ill River upstream of Strasbourg put a definitive district from flooding. The digging of the pit Riepberg in 1524 had already allowed the installation of some constructions area Saint-Urbain, but they remained few. Farms and hostels is were also built as early as the middle ages, along the roads which pass through the territory (route de Lyon, Vienna road), and since the 18th century, along the way connecting Strasbourg to the field of military exercise of the polygon (polygon road). A modest Hamlet, Ratzendorfel, as well as a few factories of tiles, glue strong, waxed canvas settle out of town, on these inexpensive land. It is on the right-of-way of the Riepberg gap filled that settled in 1861, the first railway to Kehl. Military glaze delimit Neudorf during the period of the Reichsland the relocation of the terminus of the barge on the Rhine in Mannheim in Strasbourg, requires improving the control of the River, the development of railways and port facilities. It thus opens in Neudorf, in 1892, a train station and the ports of the Heyritz and Austerlitz. As early as 1875, it demolishes the fortifications of Vauban that stifled Strasbourg to rebuild in news; this Chamber is completed circa 1900, South of Neudorf, by a large rail loop built on a defensive embankment flanked by redoubts. This new railway to Kehl definitely separates Neudorf Meinau and the Neuhof. Saint UrbainEn planning material, in addition to military easements which, in some areas, limit the height of buildings and impose the use of precarious materials, construction is regulated by a general plan (Bebauungsplan für 1896 Neudorf) and a zoning plan that creates five types of urban landscapes: 'contiguous buildings', 'open constructions' (surrounded by gardens), 'industrial perimeters' (plain of the butchers), 'protected areas' (water catchment area), 'Garden'. In 1866, Neudorf had 5 000 inhabitants, (phone number hidden). This progression is the result of the efforts development and immigration of a generally Protestant population from German or Alsatian rural origin. Newcomers, often very poor, have not left, with a few exceptions, very interesting building architecturally. They settled in small economic buildings, more rarely, in houses, individual or bi-familiales, built in small series. On the other hand, facilities (schools, churches, orphanage...) are widely dimensioned and sometimes imposing. The district is expanding between the two wars after 1919, cut of the Ruhr and Rhineland, the economic dynamism of Strasbourg is diminished. Alsace, become 'running border' is not conducive to investment. However Neudorf continues to expand, driven by harbours (creation of the Autonomous Port in 1924), by the construction of large social housing quoted Siegfried, cited Risler, buildings of report, along the avenue Jean-Jaurès, built on the site of former Bahndamm and by the Director, and part of this avenue, roads linking district Saint-Urbain in the centre of Neudorf. The 1939-45 war put an end to this growth. As in the border area, the population was evacuated, some of it back in 1940. On September 6, 1943 bombing causes Neudorf the death of nearly 200 people and the destruction of more than 300 buildings. Reconstruction, particularly visible along the route of the polygon between the market square and the railway, will last until the end of the 1950s. It was in 1954 that Neudorf found its population of 1936, adjacent to 26 000 inhabitants. The area strengthens its role in the urban area after 1960 this period was characterized by an intensification of the habitat and the improvement of relations with the city centre. Neudorf going suburban than quasi-central district status. The realization of the Lycée Jean Monnet in 1965, Churchill viaduct in 1967, the administrative centre of the urban community in 1976, Southern Bypass in 1992, library in 1993, line A of the tramway in 1994 have contributed to raise the level of the district services and strengthen its place in the city. Residential expansion takes two forms. The first (from 1960 to 1980) is the territorial extension on the last agricultural lands of the Ziegelfeld, South of rue de Ribeauvillé and the railway branch line serving the port. This extension has created two large ensembles, 'New Neudorf' and the 'new Musau', which remained however on a human scale. The desire to create a residential and functional diversity is found embodied in the realization of condominiums HLM and private (for example, rue de Soultz), by the presence of detached houses of low height (Fréland Street), by a small artisanal area (street of Altkirch). The second form of development is the nesting of contemporary buildings in the existing urban fabric, most often breaking with the old scheduling (rue de Scherwiller). In 1975, Neudorf had 35 000 inhabitants, it employs today about 37 000. Neudorf in the centre of the town almost ' island MalrauxEn 1990, the 1922 Act which authorized construction along the basins of the port as buildings related to port activity is repealed. The concerned land gave rise to many projects. Today, the transformation of the site is engaged with the realisation of agglomeration equipment (cinema complex, city of music and dance, Médiathèque André Malraux, shopping centre); the realization of the Park of the star, the development of the Heyritz in leisure centre, the redevelopment of the N4 in boulevard... will allow closer Neudorf basins and the city centre. The transformations within the 'old Neudorf', such as the redevelopment of the road of the polygon, the creation of a stop train bridge Suchard, the extension of line C of the tramway to the Neuhof reinforce the attractiveness of the area. In a century and a half, Ratzendorfel, Hamlet without school, turned in Neudorf, first simple suburb, today central and attractive area... Transport TRAMPlus
