Wonderful to be able to stay here again.
My daughter and I had the Wonderful privilege to come to Japan again after 2 years. And, we had such a Beautiful time with our gracious hosts, Hideo-San and his wife Yukako-San, in June of 2017. That we had to come back. And, once again our stay here was very Special! We strolled through the Arashiyama Koen (Bamboo Forest), the Okochi-Sanso villa, enjoy Green Tea/Sakura ice cream, and a lovely Matcha tea with a sweet. Our hosts are fun to visit with and they are very accommodating to take you to the places you would like to go. We highly recommend this Unique experience of staying in a 200 yr old Thatched Roof home and get the feel of life in the Beautiful countryside of Kyoto.

Wonderful "samurai" house
This was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan. I had the house all to myself, and wandering barefoot on the tatami mats was wonderful. There is an inset traditional fire and cooking area, a small Buddhist altar and a full timbered attic in addition to several other rooms, a kitchen and bath areas. Hideo set up a bed for me, and it looks as there is an option for two beds in addition to the usual futon options on the floor.
As noted in other reviews, Hideo is a wonderful and accommodating guide. He wants to know what you want to get out of the trip and will adjust accordingly. He drove me to the famous thatched village of Miyama and left me to wander and draw for a few hours before picking me up and going to a delicious buckwheat noodle restaurant. Then we visited a very special, hidden and old temple with a huge old cherry tree that was even amazing after its blossoms have faded.
There are two restaurants close to Hideo's place, and he is willing to organize special cooking for larger groups. But do take advantage of his offer to go to a grocery store for breakfast items. There is only coffee and rice available on site.

Best way to experience Japan "for real" as well as all the of Kyoto
This homestay is the perfect combo of experiencing a traditional house (with traditional tatami beds etc) which has some privacy for the guests along with the friendliness and learning opportunities of a homestay. Hideo and Yukako are so open and friendly if anything is not comfortable they fix it, and its so much fun and interesting to get to know them and learn about themselves and also about Japan. They are very open minded and you can ask anything without worrying about offending them. They have a wonderful sense of humour. Hideo is a wonderful guide, and can take you around the local area as well as on wonderful site seeing tours of Kyoto (which is a reasonable drive about 1 hour either way in his comfortable car). Yukako is an exceptional cook, and one of our favourite evenings was making sushi with her, and she cooked the most incredible traditional hotpot for us twice (we liked it so much we went again). You can eat alone, or with Hideo / Yukako (we much preferred it with their company!). Yukako is also a very gentle and flowing yoga instructor. We did a yoga session with her most days which was both meditative and physical, and we recommend that to both beginners and experienced yogis. Their dogs are GORGEOUS and our 2 daughters walked with Hideo and Yukako every day twice, and sometimes took the dogs for walks on their own. We were very comfortable for our 8 and 10 year old to walk around the area without adult supervision and with the dogs which was a wonderful freedom for them.
If you want to experience real Japan, and not just stay in a hotel and see lots of temples, then this is a wonderful opportunity not to be missed!

Thank you for your warm review. They stay my home for over ten days. I worried about their tour way. Our area is typical rural. So, I worry this local rural location. But they enjoyed countryside life with naughty 3 dogs. Thank you for taking care of dogs by daughters. I hope they will come again.

Best experience ever!
My cousin Ashley and I stayed at Hideo's farmhouse back in the fall of 2015. I noticed this forum as I am booking a trip to come back and bring my entire family to Kyoto and his house in spring of 2018. The entire experience was amazing. Hideo is hilarious and has my cousin and I laughing non-stop the whole time. We got VIP private tours (this is for a fee but he can tell you about price) around both Kyoto, and his area as well.
I had previously visited Kyoto the summer of 2015, and what a difference it makes when you have a private guide with a car! Hideo and his daughter Acqua took us to see the fall leaves illuminated at night in various locations around Kyoto. As far as Keihoku, the area in which Hideo lives, it's breathtaking. We saw a few areas that rivaled Kyoto as far as beauty, but not a tourist to be found. We woke up with smiles on our faces and songs in our hearts. We also woke up pinching ourselves and making sure our experience was actually real. The house itself is a fun and very different experience.
I can't wait for my entire family to experience this in a few short months!

Wonderful place to stay
This was an amazing place to stay for our family. It was me, my wife and our two kids (3 and 7 years old). Hideo-san picked us up at the bus station and gave us a ride to the supermarket where we could buy food and breakfast.
The kids really loved this house!
Hideo-san and his wife was so kind and helpful to us during our whole stay there.
And the surrounding area was so calm and beautiful, we really loved staying at this place.
We were able to eat dinners together with Hideo-san and his wife. Yukako-san cooked so delicious food, her cooking was soooooo good.
During our stay we visited some places together with Hideo-san who drove us around in his car. We were able to visit some really amazing places.
Couldn't have had a better place to stay during our trip to Japan.

I enjoyed everything with them very much. They always support our cooking,clean. And they give me interesting explanation about Sweeden culture and nature. 2 kids are very shy. But they are polite and having good smile. I really like their attitude. I hope to come here Sweeden guests. I understood Sweeden people charactor.

Wonderous Adventure to Japan
By the Amazing Grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ we were able to make an incredible journey to Japan. Our hosts Hideo and Yukako Uyeda made our journey that much more memorable. From the beautiful night to see fireflies for the very first time, to wandering through the Bamboo Forest, eating delicious ramen, and sharing hotpot and soba meals, laughter and fun conversation. Special Japanese homestay
If you're like our family & are keen to experience the cultures of the places you visit, first hand - then staying at Tokuheian is a must do. Apart from being an amazing home which has been past down through 7 generations (and is has all the modern facilities like hair dryers, excellent heating etc) it's the people who own this home that make it special. Hideo and Yukata are lovely, warm and fun people who go out of their way to make sure your stay meets (and exceeds) your expectations. During our stay we shared some wonderful meals (we bought the food with Yukata and she prepared it), visited local villages, trekked through the forest in search of the 1000 year old tree and visited an onsen. Tours can be customised. It is a 1.5 hour bus ride through a windy, picturesque road - you're in the middle of northern Kyoto and the pace is very different to Tokyo but just as special. Highly recommended for travellers in search of something different where you live and breathe the Japanese culture in a refreshingly relaxed pace. Thank you Hideo and Yukata for your hospitality.

A beautiful adventure in the mountains
My husband and I were very fortunate to find this amazing little house owned by Hideo and his beautiful wife Yukako. We spent a fantastic weekend and which provided us a wonderful opportunity to experience the Japanese countryside in Keihoku which is about a 1 hour, scenic bus ride from the Kyoto train station. Hideo and Yukako have good English speaking skills and they are very engaging and kind hosts. WE had many laughs together, good conversation and we were treated like family. The beds were comfortable with a large kitchen and dining room. Plenty of room for the whole family. I recommend adding on some of the activities Hideo offers to enhance your visit. Cooking and enjoying a meal, a hike in an ancient forest to see 800 year old cedar trees, there are bicycles for riding around the beautiful pastoral farmlands. Yukako is a great cook and you can arrange to add on meals to your stay for a small fee.This is a great opportunity to leave the big cities of Japan behind and see the countryside. You will have an experience to remember.

We enjoyed life with them very much. They helped to entertain TV show for us. Then Japan people can watch TV program "jinsei no rakuen"(paradise of life) on Dec 3rd at 18:00 Asahi TV. I will enjoy this program. And I will send DVD soon.

Unique wonderful place to visit!
It was such a pleasure and beautiful experience to visit . We can't thank our hosts Hideo and his wife enough for all the personal attention and private touring that we booked with him. We felt like visiting family and would definitely return .The house was nice and clean and had everything we needed. The nature and area around is absolutely stunning with lots of hiking trails ,waterfalls etc. Kyoto is also only about one hour away .We would highly recommend to visit!

Extraordinaire
Nous avons passé 5 jours extraordinaires dans cette maison. Elle est magnifique et nous avons pu avoir le plaisir de vivre dans une maison traditionnelle avec tout le confort moderne. Hideo et Yukoka, nos hôtes, sont très attentionnés et veillent à ce que tout se passe bien. Ils nous ont emmené voir la côte de la mer du Japon où nous avons visité un marché aux poissons fabuleux. Le restaurateur du marché nous a préparé les poissons qu'ils avaient choisi pour nous et c'était excellent. Après une belle baignade , nous avons terminé cette journée par une sushi party qu'ils nous ont organisée avec des poissons ramenés du marché. Les environs de la maison sont très beaux: des forêts majestueuses (avec des girolles...), des rivières ou nous nous sommes baignées. un Magnifique temple zen ou nous étions seules. Un jour de moins beau temps, Yukoka nous a emmené aux bains chauds: une expérience très intéressante. Ce séjour dans cette belle maison avec Yukoka, Hideo et leurs chiens Adzuki et Gown restera un moment inoubliable
