Dishonest – No Accountability – Bait and Switch – Fraud
DO not ever use this provider or if you have already booked with them know they with treat you terribly and take 0 accountability while doing so.
My wife and I booked our first 2-week vacation in 12 years, 4-5-star hotels and white glove service all the way was planned and achieved until we arrived at Posada (Casa) Bemberg. We are very flexible and experienced travelers so the review below is not an overreaction.
This part of our journey was meant to be a glorious jungle adventure near Iguassu Falls in Argentina. After a 1.5-hour car ride (30 minutes being down a very dark pothole laden road) we arrived at the Posada Bemberg. The main gate was closed and where the Posada Bemberg should have been was pitch black. We identified another sign and drove to the Casa Bemberg (500m further down the road from the Posada Bemberg).
Upon arrival, we were not greeted until after we had dragged our bags into the “lobby” where we were met by a younger member of staff. The lobby seemed ok (more on that later) and we were told dinner was being served (think Bed and Breakfast style). So, we said goodbye to our guide, and we took our bags up 2 flights of stairs to our room, which was unlocked.
Instead of a WOW moment when we opened the door to our room, we got a sucker punch in the face. This place was a dump, a one-star Hostel at best. I have attached pictures as proof and for reference. It was very dark (we are in the middle of the jungle) and did not feel secure as there was either no door in some places or doors that did not close in others. Nothing appeared secure
We immediately went downstairs to meet the young staff member and asked her to call our guide from the hotel landline phone. There was no answer as there is no cell phone reception (remember, this is the jungle adventure)! We explained to the staff member what was happening, and she said that the Posada Bemberg was under “renovations” and all guests moved to the Casa Bemberg. When asked if anyone was notified about this switch, she said she did not “think so”. When we later talked to the 2 travel agencies that booked this part of the vacation for us, they confirmed they were never notified. Our trip to this point and after was perfect so I believe they were defrauded as well.
There were only 2 other guests at the Casa Bemberg (that we could see). When we asked to speak with the manager/owner we were told he was unavailable (although we could hear him talking on the phone) and that there was nothing that could be done. The manager never spoke to us – even as we bolted the next morning (more on him later).
So, we ate our dinner which was delivered in rapid fire fashion, and being honest, was not a bad meal. But, we were fed dinner with a “can’t wait to get you out of here” vibe. We continued to try and call our guide from the hotel landline phone without success, so we went up to further examine our room (room details below).
About an hour after our arrival to the dump called Casa Bemberg and while we were lamenting our situation in our “room”, the lobby phone rings and rings and rings until it stops (never answered). Five minutes later, it happens again, rings and goes unanswered. I went downstairs to the “lobby” and called for assistance, loudly and no one was there. The staff had literally left the building. Think about that: You have arrived at a house fit for a horror movie, in the middle of the jungle, the doors are not closed or locked and there is no staff to be found? There were no numbers left to call anyone should there be a need and no phones in the room. We were literally abandoned in the jungle by these creeps. So, I picked up their phone and hit re-dial. Sure enough, our guide had been the one trying to call.
I informed her of the situation, she called her agency and confirmed that they had not been notified of the switch. Given the time of evening (midnight) and the fact that our guide and driver were at least 90 minutes away, my wife and I decided to push through the night and our guide and driver would meet us at 7am the next day to leave.
The Room:
Even in the dark of night, the room was disgusting. The lobby was old, musty and the furniture faded. The lobby was open to the outside air and the humidity of the jungle had taken its toll. Below are the details of the room:
• Full sized bed – We had booked King rooms and suites for the entire vacation
• No room key, until I asked for one at dinner and was taken to retrieve an actual key. The room where the keys are kept was not locked, even after the staff left (yes, I checked)
• One little couch and one little chair, both dusty, moldy and with slip covers that were falling apart (see pic)
• 3 lamps in the room that provided harsh lighting at best (see pic)
• One main window with 2 broken panes and mold around the frame. 2 windows in the bathroom with mold around the frames and one that did not close. That window was so old and swollen it literally did not close! (see Pic)
• Mold EVERYWHERE in the bathroom – Shower, sink, toilet, door frame, walls (see pic)
• Cups for the bathroom had not been washed and there was toothpaste residue from a previous guest
• Hairs in the shower (not ours)!
• Door to bathroom was a clear glass door so there was NO privacy. There was a curtain, but you needed someone outside the bathroom to close it for you because of the set-up
• Bathroom blind (to close off the doors to the crumbling patio) was moldy had a dead fly stuck to it (it was the cheap, plastic retractable kind). We had not pulled this blind down; it was already down and fly already there. (see pic)
• Bathroom light was FULL of dead bugs (see pic)
• In the light of day, we noticed a boot mark on the wall in the bedroom (see pic). Someone had used a hiking boot to try and kill a bug and no one had cleaned it.
• There is plenty more but by now you get the point – Bottom line, we “slept” fully clothed
Leaving the next morning:
Our guide arrived at 7am and used the bathroom in the lobby. There was no toilet paper and it smelled of a sewer. I know this because she immediately came to our room after and told us about her experience. Once she was in the room, she was disgusted by the state of the place. She took a bunch of pictures as proof of the horrible conditions.
When she confronted the owner/manager about the condition of the room and the broken windows, he asked her “How do you know the guests did not break the windows”? So, not only did he commit fraud with the bait and switch of buildings, notify NO ONE about the same, hide from his guests when he knew there was an issue, he tried to blame the room conditions on us! Are you kidding me?
We saw him on the way out and he said nothing to us. He watched us walk out of his dump for house, exhausted, angry and feeling taken advantage of and he said nothing. The switch of locations was never mentioned by the owner or the staff and no apology given for that switch which, is a clear indicator that they knew what they were doing and trying to get away with it. FRAUD!
I hope this review is helpful to someone before they go to either of these locations. I cannot comment on the Posada Bemberg as we never saw it. I can say that I would never use this chain again or recommend it to anyone given the fraudulent nature of how they run their business, the complete lack of accountability and total dishonesty about the room/location. They ruined one of our 12 nights and most of the next day (we had to find another hotel in Iguassu, get showered in locker rooms and started our only day at the falls 4 hours late).
They should be embarrassed and ashamed, but they won’t be as given the state of the property and the treatment of their guests, they clearly do not care. Do not stay with them if you can avoid it and change your reservations if you have. At a minimum, call and confirm that if you have reserved the Posada Bemberg you are not going to the Casa Bemberg. The Casa Bemberg is dump!
To compare, the bathroom picture on this website is the same bathroom in our pictures attached to this review. The place is filthy
