The beautiful river cottage is a relaxing retreat.
My fiancé and I are from Boston and we were in Portland visiting with friends and family. But a major highlight of the visit was our stay in the Husum House. We stayed only one night with another couple and their two young children, but we thoroughly enjoyed our experience and the kids did too. The cottage was impeccably clean and very well organized. The kitchen is spacious and had all the necessary pots, pans, plates, and dishes for fixing meals without being without certain utensils. They even had a large stock of spices and dried herbs. Pam and Matt thought of everything you could possibly need out here.
The shiny wood stove was blazing the moment we arrived until we departed, which created a warm and cozy atmosphere; it was perfect for sipping cocoa or drinking a glass of wine and being with friends. The beds and sleeping quarters were so comfortable it felt like I was sleeping in a piece of heaven. I would rate it as comfortable as sleeping in my own bed.
Upon the suggestion of Matt and Pam, we went to Everybody's Brewing. The young but cool and laid back clientele felt friendly and warm. They served awesome food made from quality ingredients and had a selection of great beers on tap. If they had this place in my neighborhood I would go there all the time.
We would definitely love to come back in warmer weather when we can take advantage of the sun deck and river. The Husum House is the perfect retreat from the city situated in a beautiful environment where you can still go out to a local bar and get excellent food and beer after a long day of playing outside.

Fantastic Place to Stay - Close to everything but Away From the Bustling Crowd
The Husum House is located on the beautiful White Salmon River, and right across the street from several rafting companies. We used Wet Planet and had a great white water rafting adventure. Husum is just far enough away from everything to make you feel like you're out in the country, but White Salmon is closeby and Hood River just a bit further.
Husum House has just about any amenity you would want. It seems that everyone who stays there leaves something behind and it's a nice tradition. One of the most relaxing things we did was sit on the back porch in the evenings and watch and listen to the river. It's fun to watch the rafting groups take their rafts out right around the corner. Matt has loads of brochures on the area and a really nice guidebook with suggestions on what to do. We did the Fruit Loop, Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood and the nearby alpine slide, rafting, and a super hike called the Sleeping Beauty Trail which is mentioned in the Mt. Adams hiking guide at the house. Of course there are scads of wineries, but we'd suggest Wind River, just two miles or so from the house. As the guidebook mentions, tell Joel that you're staying at Matt's House and you'll find him very hospitable. The entire area is beautiful and we hope to go back again one day and we'll definitely stay at the Husum House.

Completely Relaxing
I stayed at the Husum house and completely recommend it! The house is very comfortable and relaxing. Sitting on the deck , in the sun, watching the river flow by, is my idea of a perfect day! It is also close to Portland, making it very convenient and quick to get to. I also like that it is so close to White Salmon and Hood River. I also have to say the beds are the most comfortable beds I have slept in. I have to find out where they got them. If you're looking for a great vacation rental, Husum House should be on your list.

Love this place!
Our family enjoyed a weekend away at the Husum House and were surprised how by how great this riverfront heaven is! We played games, cooked, hiked, rode bikes, and relaxed in what feels like a world away but really was not that far from our home in Portland. The house had everything we needed and was very well kept and comfortable. Will definitely be making this an annual retreat!

European Charm
The house has the feel of a European country house with its open floor plan and high ceilings. With its location next to the White Salmon River, open windows bring the musical sounds of birds and running water. The house is roomy, spotless, and conveniently located, within easy reach of good restaurants and water sports. We loved our stay there!

Charming cottage in gorgeous setting
Highly recommend Husum House. Nicely updated, but still retains it's quaint charm. Great deck for stargazing. Extremely reasonable rates. Centrally located to many activities, including 43 wineries, 5 breweries, Fruit Loop (farm stands), whitewater rafting, restaurants and shopping in Hood River and White Salmon, Maryhill, Multnomah Falls, etc, ECG. Wish we had found this sooner. Will be back!
